• German romantic painting, like German romantic
  poetry and philosophy, was inspired by a
  conception of nature as a manifestation of the
  divine. This led to a school of symbolic
  landscape, using elements of mysticism and
  allegory. Another (rival) school of painters
  called the Nazarenes, attempted to recover the
  style and spirit of medieval religious art.

  following Rung, Friedrich, and Overbeck.

  coincided with the Napoleonic Wars (1799-1815),
  and the first French romantic painters found
  their inspiration in contemporary events.
