Finished Body Paragraph
  • Yollie is a very vain young woman, and this
vanity causes her mother to feel guilty and give
in to Yollies desire to have new clothes. Gary
Soto shows us this when he writes how Yollie came
home from the dance, where her dyed dress was
ruined by the rain, and yelled to her mother,
The dress. Its cheap! Its no good! (pg.
    113) The fact that Yollie is so mean to her
mother over a ruined dress shows that she is more
concerned about appearances than Mrs. Morenos
feelings. Her vanity causes her to do these mean
things to get her way. Another example of
Yollies vanity is when Mrs. Moreno pulls out the
little money she has saved and gives it to Yollie
for a new outfit. Gary Soto writes that her
mother held up five twenties, a blossom of green
that smelled sweeter than flowers on that
    Saturday. (pg. 114)

9
Finished Body Paragraph
  • To Yollie the money smells great because it
means she will get a new outfit, which she cares
about more than using the money for something
necessary. Mrs. Moreno feels sorry for her
daughter, so she gives this money to her, but
Yollie knows better and is too vain to say no.
Once again Yollie succeeds in getting her mother
to give in to her vain ways.

    differently.
  • Tie to thesis
  • Restate what your thesis says. Tell what you
just said in your body paragraph.
  • Concluding statement
  • Put a bow on the package. Sum it up!
  • Example The story, Bargain, is a great
example of how the traits we have affect how our
    lives turn out.
