Why write?
  • The answer to this question is as varied as the
    techniques to achieve the goal.
  • We write to convince others our way of thinking
    is best.
  • We write to communicate ideas.
  • We write to make others laugh.
  • We write to understand ourselves better.
  • We write to entertain others.
  • We write to report the facts.
  • We write to remember the experience.
  • We write to be understood by others.
  • We write because we are required to do so for a
    grade.

5
How do we write well?
  • We can vary the tone and style of a piece of
writing by changing the sentence patterns and by
    choosing powerful words.

6
To get you thinking
  • Consider the sentences on the following slides.
Who is the intended audience? What writing style
does the author use? What tone does the writer
    take.

7
Example 1
  • I am applying for a position with your company.
I have a college education. I have fiddled around
in research and development. I have come up with
a money making idea. I would start with your
company for minimum wage. I want a job.

8
Tone and Style
  • Who is the intended audience?
  • What tone does the writer take?
  • What writing style is she using?

9
Example 2
  • I am writing in regard to employment with your
firm. In my previous position, I was in charge
of research and development for the Harrington
Chemical Company. Several of our research
discoveries have been adapted for commercial use,
and one particular breakthrough in linear
hydraulics is now being used by every oil company
    in the country.

11
Example 3
  • Id like a job with your outfit. I can do
anything you want me to do, you name it, Ill do
it. I dont have any experience or education and
Im not that strong and I get along with people.
Im ready to start any time because I need the
dough. Let me know when you want me.

Effective Writing
  • When writing, consider the strategies for making
your sentences and word choice as effective as
    possible.
  • We can do this by utilizing five techniques . . .

15
1. Sentence Length
  • Vary the length of your sentences. Dont use all
  • long sentences or all short sentences.
  • Not good I ran to class. I was tardy. I was
tardy yesterday. I got an eighth hour.
  • Now practice write a paragraph describing
your experiences in your English III class. Vary
    the length of your sentences.

17
2. Sentence Structure
  • Not only can you vary the length, you can vary
the structure of the sentences. (Following a
    rigid sentenced pattern quickly becomes
    repetitive and boring.)
  • Not good I ran to class. I was tardy for the
second day in a row. I was mad at myself for
being late again. I had three tardies now. I
    got an eighth hour.
  • Now practice Rewrite the paragraph to vary the
    structure of the sentences.

3. Interruptions for emphasis
  • Another strategy is to use interruptions for
  • emphasis. A sudden break in thought calls
  • attention to itself. Use this device to
  • emphasize an important point or detail.
  • Now practice Write a paragraph about the most
enticing project youve done in English III,
emphasizing the lesson you learned from the
    project.

20
Youll never believe this project!
  • Did you interrupt the sentence to emphasize what
    you learned?

21
4. Parallel structure
  • Parallelism is deliberate repetition of certain
  • words, phrases, or sentence structures to
  • achieve certain effects.
  • For example Four score and seven years ago, our
fathers brought forth on this continent a new
nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the
proposition that all men are created equal.
  • Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing
whether that nation or any nation so conceived
and so dedicated can long endure.
  • Now practice Revise one of your previous
paragraphs so that two sentences are parallel.

22
Parallel Practice
23
5. Word Choice
  • The words we choose affect the reader.
Therefore, decide the effect you want and choose
words that convey that feeling, attitude, or
    subject.
  • For example If you are writing about action
heroes, use allusions to Greek gods, connotations
    to strength, descriptions of testosterone,
    brilliance, courage.

24
Word Choice
  • For Example If you are writing about a
princess, use words that reflect soft, feminine,
    pretty characteristics.
  • . . . unless your princess is a SHREK like
princess then use words appropriate for her
    action-packed, self-efficient, witty qualities.

25
Word Choice
  • Now practice Write a paragraph explaining Dead
Poets Society message. Choose words that
reflect your gut reaction and the take-home
    message of Neils suicide.

26
Dead Poets Society showed me . . .
27
Writing Well
  • Know your audience
  • Vary sentence length
  • Vary sentence structure
  • Use interruption for effect
  • Practice parallel structure
  • Recognize the power of word choice

28
Pulling it all together
  • We learned that sentence structure and word
choice effect the message we are conveying. By
varying sentence structure and length, by
selecting words that reflect the writings
purpose, by practicing parallel structure, and by
interrupting the format to make a point, we
greatly improve the delivery of our ideas and
make a bigger impact on our audience.
