  • It was the Friars job to teach and help all
    Indians in Texas.
  • They were very religious and caring men who
    really did care about the Native Texans.
  • They were hardworking and joyous men who did
    their best to help everyone around them.

  • All Spanish Friars in Texas were members of the
    FRANCISCAN order.
  • This means that they styled their lives after a
    man named St. Francis of Assisi, a 13th Century
    Italian Saint.
  • They made three vows Poverty (to be poor),
    Chastity (to not have a wife), and Obedience (to
    always obey God and their superiors)

  • Most people think of Friars as short, balding,
    and fat. Friars are regular people they came in
    all shapes and sizes.
  • They wore the outfit of a medieval beggar.
  • This outfit included a few things.
  • 1. A grey wool robe with a hood.
  • 2. a rope belt, called a cincture. It had three
    knots to remind them of their vows.
