THE SCENARIO
  • You turn on the TV to
watch your favorite show and see a commercial for
Six Flags exciting new ride. You cant wait to
go there this weekend with your friends. Just as
the commercials are ending and your favorite show
is starting, the telephone rings. When you answer
the phone, a man with a deep voice introduces
himself as Mr. Stern, the owner of another
    amusement
  • park a few miles from Six Flags.

3
THE CHALLENGE
  • Mr. Stern complains to you that he is going
to lose his business to Six Flags because of the
brand new ride. (Your mind wanders to your
favorite show you are missing, and wonder what
this has to do with you.) He goes on to explain
that he wants a new ride too a brand new roller
coaster. He needs someone to design the new
ride, and your science teacher, who is one of his
good friends, recommended you for the job

4
THE JOURNEY
  • You are to design a roller coaster that is
fun, exciting, and SAFE. If you design such a
roller coaster, you will be paid well for your
work. However, a coaster that is
  • exciting and unsafe, or
  • safe but boring will
  • not get him any
  • customers and will
  • not earn you any money.

5
THE REPORT
  • You will create a poster
  • (a sales pitch to Mr. Stern).
  • The poster must include
  • A name of your roller coaster
  • A slogan, picture, or advertisement that will
make people want to ride your new ride.
  • a scale drawing of the roller coaster. Dont
    forget the scale!
  • a paragraph (at least 5 sentences) explaining how
you know your ride is safe and why you think you
think people would be interested in riding your
    ride.

6
THE REPORT cont.
  • Mr. Stern wants the design in one week so he
can get to work on construction right away.
Before you start designing, you will want to do
some research on what makes a roller coaster
safe. Here are some websites that will help you
    with your research.
