Whats in the Beginning

• A grabber
• A personal story, a statistic, a quotation from a
  credible source or person, something dramatic
  that grabs your audiences attention
• Grabber must have something to do with your
  speech
• Please never start with something like, Today, I
  will be talking about or My topic today is
• A roller coaster ride.
• I had finally joined the club

• Introduction to the topic
• Define to your audience concisely what your topic
  is going to be
• Make a very clear thesis statement (this is going
  to critical in your high school, college,
  professional lives)
• What is a thesis statement?

• Needs to be an opinion
• You need to be able to agree or disagree with it
• Which ones can be thesis statements? Which ones
  can be STRONG thesis statements?
• A. The lockers here are gray
• B. SI is better than SH
• C. Major League Baseball should have stricter
  policies regarding steroid use
• D. Because health care is a basic right, all
  governments ought to finance health insurance for
  its citizens
• E. Due to the economic nature of our society and
  the importance of self reliance, citizens need to
  be responsible for their own health insurance.

• And dont forget to signpost your points Does
  everybody know what signposting means?
• Make sure your signpost matches what you say in
  the body of your speech
• If you say you will have 3 points in the
  beginning, you better just have 3 points in the
  speech no more and no less

• You want to illustrate your points and really dig
  deep into them
• Your points should aim to prove or support your
  thesis
• This is where you provide analysis and statistics
  each point should ideally have 4 elements
