  • What is e-Learning?

e-Learning
  • Learning facilitated and supported through the
    use of information and communications technology,
    e-learning can cover a spectrum of activities
    from supported learning, to blended learning (the
    combination of traditional and e-learning
    practices), to learning that is entirely online.
    Whatever the technology, however, learning is the
    vital element.

  • Early days - organic, local and disjointed
    adoption of e-learning
  • CityUs Information Systems Strategic Plan
    2005-2010
  • CityU has deployed the Blackboard Academic Suite
    (Bb) as its unified e-learning platform.
    e-learning project was launched at the start of
    Semester A 2005-06, with the new system serving
    over 700 academic staff and around 22,000
    students.

  • Phases of development
  • Blackboard portal with single-sign-on from Bb to
    AIMS
  • upgraded to version 7.1 to support multilingual
  • support teaching and learning to achieve their
    expected outcomes
  • In addition to full Bb deployment for
    credit-bearing courses, the platform will also be
    used to support programme-based activities
    more.
  • Additional functions and features are
    investigated or integrated to Bb system on
    ongoing basis
  • Steering group of the e-learning project Dr J T
    Yu (CIO), Professor Lilian Vrijmoed (DSL), Dr
    Jonathan Webster (CTL), Professor Douglas Vogel
    (IS), Professor Steve Ching (LIB), Dr Eva Wong
    (EDO) and Ms Maria Chin (CSC). The Steering Group
    will continue to lead the e-learning project to
    support the strategic development of the
    University.
