  • A grown female weighs between 330-550 pounds.
  • Polar bears have heavy bodies ,strong legs, and
    sharp teeth.

  • They also have long necks, small ears, short
    tails and sharp claws.
  • Polar bears coats appear white or cream
    colored.
  • They also have black skin, black noses, lips,
    and tongues.

the bears blend in with snow and ice.

Where The Polar Bears Live
  • Polar bears live in the Arctic regions of
    Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Norway,and Russia.
  • Polar bears live on ice that covers much of the
Arctic ocean. They try to stay on the ice all
    year.

5
  • It is easier for them to hunt from ice then from
    water or land.
  • Polar bears are forced to live on land in areas
where the ice completely melts during the summer.

6
Communication and Behavior
  • Polar bears communicate by growling, hissing, and
    gnashing their teeth.
  • Cubs cry, smack their lips, and growl.
  • Female bears grunt to warn their cubs of danger.
  • Polar bears do not sleep during the winter like
    other bears.
  • Polar bears sleep after their meals.
  • Adult polar bears live alone most of their lives.
  • Cubs stay with their moms for two and a half
    years.

7
How the Polar Bear Survives
  • The polar bears diet consists of mostly seals.
  • People are the polar bears enemy because they
hunt them and use them for food, clothing and
    bedding.
  • Polar bears have a thick layer of fat called
blubber and heavy coats to help them stay warm.
  • Also their sharp, curved claws help them from
slipping when walking or running on the ice.

8
Life Cycle
  • Female polar bears dig their dens in late October
    and November.
  • They dig their dens in snowbanks and hillsides.
  • Polar bears have 2 cubs in early winter, and they
    weigh 16-24 ounces.
  • Polar bear cubs spend their first few weeks of
    life nursing.
  • Cubs start walking when they are about 2 months
    old.
  • Polar bear cubs are allowed to leave the den when
they are about 4 months old.
