Introduction
  • Have you ever wondered what life was like back in
colonial America in the late 1600s and early
1700s? You will pretend to be a colonist living
in this time period. Remember that in this time
    period they had no electricity

Task
  • You will be working with a group of four students
to find out background information on colonial
America. Then, you will each take on a different
role (farmer, artisan, woman, and slave) to
become knowledgeable about one aspect of life in
    colonial America.
  • After you have researched their role, you will
    create two projects
  • (1) as an individual you will create a journal
entry for a day in the life of the role you chose
in order to describe daily life in colonial
    America.
  • (2) as a group you will write a play
demonstrating life in colonial America for one
    day
  • As a group you will be presenting your play to
    the class.

Process
  • Step 1 You will be placed in groups of 4. Once
you have your group you need to decide what
student will have what job. Click on the link
below to complete the information sheet.
  • Character Information Sheet
  • Step 2 Use the websites on the resource page to
find out what life would be like as a colonist.
Use the general information websites to obtain
some background knowledge about colonial life.
After you have gathered some background
knowledge, start using the websites for your
particular job. Open My job to take some notes
as you travel through the websites.
  • Step 3 Now that you know all about life in
Colonial America, you will need to write your
diary.  Remember you are going to talk like you
are a colonist so talk about your life, not their
lives.  The more details you have the better!
You want to stay in character for this project,
so try to use words they would have used.
  • Step 4 Now that you have finished your research
and diary, you can work with your group to create
a skit about your colonial jobs. This skit
should be written down and rehearsed before you
present. Each skit should be between 3-5 minutes
long.  You do not have to memorize your lines,
but you should have an idea of what they say.
