Title: An attempt at a Global Gaze

1
An attempt at a Global Gaze
  • Listening from the Seventh Level
  • What do we mean by Health and Disease?
  • The term Non-human specific and kingdoms
  • Triangulating Word and Gesture
  • Where are we listening from?
  • Emptiness and endgame
  • The two journeys
  • An illustrative case

2
On using the Sensation Method
  • - listening from the Seventh Level

3
  • THE LEVELS
  • Level 1 Name
  • Level 2 Fact (local modalities)
  • Level 3 Emotions
  • --------------------------------------------------
    -------
  • Level 4 Delusions, Dreams, Deep fears
  • --------------------------------------------------
    -------
  • Level 5 Sensation
  • 5A KINGDOM
  • 5B SUBKINGDOM
  • 5C SOURCE
  • Level 6 Energy
  • Seventh level

4
  • The issues
  • of each level
  • arise
  • from
  • the
  • level
  • deeper
  • to it

5
  • All we can see is a manifestation of that which
    we cannot see.
  • All that happens in the world is a result of
    unseen forces.
  • Adyashanti

6
  • Name
  • Fact (local modalities)
  • Emotions
  • Sensation
  • Energy
  • Seventh

7
The levels..in the homeopath
  • Level 1 Homeopath,
  • Level 2 just starting to use the Sensation
    method,
  • Level 3 feeling excited, enthusiastic.and a bit
uncertain about where this will go (this is NO
    delusion).
  • Level 4 Help, Im out of my depth here. Theyre
saying REALLY odd things, and Ive not a thing
to repertorise after 5 hrs. They think Im
weird, better change tack OR Hey, Im
really great at this, nothing can go wrong
  • Level 5 Are we at sensation level yet?????
  • Level 6 What IS that thing they keep doing with
    their hands behind their back?
  • Level 7 Im all at sea without an idea in my head
    - yet somehow by me staying here patterns are
emerging I never even glimpsed before. How
beautiful - as the patients energy fills our
time together the story seems to unfold by
    itself.
  • Oh my goodness! Everything has just fallen
    into place.

8
  • When someone is in their state, giving their
case, you dont have to think in terms of any
levels or kingdoms at all, because youre not
    forming artificial divisions and constructs.
  • You are receiving what is and it is apparent.
It reveals itself in its wholeness, in its
    entirety.
  • Caragh Morrish

9
This is not mysticism
  • - this is science

10
  • All science is certain, evident knowledge. We
reject all knowledge which is merely probable and
judge that only those things should be believed
which are perfectly known, and about which there
    can be no doubts.
  • (Garber 1978)

11
Definitions of Science
  • Science is theory based on facts
    Chalmers
  • Science is a structure based on facts
    Davies
  • Theory , or ideas, in accordance with
    reality..TRUE IDEAS
    Scholten
  • Science is the search for the Universal
    (principle) in the Particular (experiment/situatio
    n) Gillies.and many others

12
  • The universal is simply the particular
  • without walls.
  • Miguel Torga
  • (Portugese family doctor and author)

13
A physicist.
  • Nature has a simplicity and therefore a great
    beauty
  • Simplicity is the hallmark of truth
  • Feynman

14
Energy and Matter are interchangeable, co-exist,
inter-are
E mc2 Einstein
15
  • In allopathy we think in linear terms
  • THIS IS BECAUSE THAT IS
  • In homeopathy by refusing to think in linear
terms we are able to glimpse the invisible
threads that tie all phenomena together.
  • (Ian Watson)

16
  • What do we mean by health?
  • What do we mean by disease?

17
HEALTH DISEASE
  • FREEDOM (whatever the external situation)
  • FLEXIBILITY of
  • Sensation
  • Function
  • FULLY PRESENT in the moment
  • Harmony
  • Ease
  • DIRECT PERCEPTION
  • Full being/becoming
  • LIMITATION (whatever the external situation)
  • A certain FIXITY of
  • Sensation
  • Function
  • LIMITED PRESENCE in the moment
  • Disharmony
  • DIS-EASE
  • Conditioned perceiving
  • Limited being

18
  • It is only the vital force, deranged to such an
abnormal state, that can furnish the organism
with its disagreeable sensation .for, as a
power invisible in itself, and only cognizable by
    its effects on the organism,
  • its morbid derangement only makes itself known
by the manifestation of disease in the sensations
and functions of those parts of the organism
exposed to the senses of the observer and
    physician
  • Hahnemann

19
those parts of the organism exposed to the
senses of the observer and physician
  • In our daily lives we rarely have a direct
perception. We invent, imagine and create
perceptions based on the seeds of images we
already have. We believe our prejudiced
perceptions to be correctall our suffering
arises from our failure to recognise things as
    they are.
  • Thich Nhat Hanh

20
Ways of perceiving
  • DIRECT perception la chose en soi
  • INTERPRETED perceiving a mixture of 1 and 3
  • IMAGINARY perceiving - remembering/delusion

21
.all our suffering arises from our failure to
recognise things as they are.
  • Even when blooming, the flower is already in the
compost and the compost already in the flower.
  • Flower and compost inter-are.
  • Delusion and enlightenment inter-are.
  • Thich Nhat Hanh
  • .just as Health and Dis-ease inter-are.

22
Today we and our patients live, eat and breathe
consumerism
  • Health is not an additional requirement, it is
our natural state. We re-gain it, we cannot buy
    or acquire it.
  • It never went away, it was simply overshadowed by
    a fixity.

23
  • Whatever MIND believes, thats what you will
live out. The mind looks for confirmation, and
    then makes conclusions.
  • We experience our belief, and then the mind
makes a model out of that.
  • Adyashanti

24
What is the nature of THIS patients PARTICULAR
fixity, or model -their repetitive take on
the world?
25
In Aphorism 7 Hahnemann states -
  • . The totality of the symptoms must be the
principle or only thing whereby the disease can
make discernible what remedy it requires, the
only thing that can determine the choice of the
most suitable helping-means. Thus, in a word,
  • the totality of symptoms must be the most
important, indeed the only thing in every case of
    disease,
  • that the medical-art practitioner has to discern
and to clear away, so that the disease shall be
    cured and transformed into health.

26
In contrast, in Aphorism 153
  • In the search for a homeopathically specific
    remedythe more striking, exceptional, unusual
and odd signs and symptoms of the disease are to
be especially and almost solely kept in view.
  • TOTALITY vs SRP paradox is similar to
    WAVE vs PARTICLE in the
    behaviour of light
  • Paradox is the nature of reality - and Hahnemann
    knew it

27
Sankarans understanding of dis-ease
  • That there are two songs playing in us
  • One our own natural human song
  • (which, on its own health )

  • And an other song, a song from the
    PLANT, MINERAL, ANIMAL
  • (and many other) KINGDOMS
  • - the song of the SOURCE sounding
  • and it is the dissonance between the two
    that manifests as dis-ease

28
  • We are only able to hear the other song if our
ears, eyes, our whole being is open
  • We must enter each session in the absence of
    memory or desire. Wilfred Bion

29
  • What repetitive, fixed pattern what other
song is sounding throughout the case?
    (sensation)
  • With what pace, intensity is it sounding? (miasm)
  • At what level can we hear that other song and its
    intensity most clearly?

30
  • THE LEVELS
  • Level 1 Name
  • Level 2 Fact
  • Level 3 Emotions
  • --------------------------
  • Level 4 Delusions,
  • Dreams, Fears
  • --------------------------
  • Level 5 Sensation
  • Level 6 Energy
  • Seventh level

  • Adyashanti

31
The seventh level
  • The moment just before birth and just after
    death.
  • About which nothing can be said
  • The concert hall before even the orchestra has
    arrived
  • The blank sheet on which all is written
  • Rajan Sankaran

32
My tentative understanding of the Seventh, or
deepest level
  • That which Hahnemann called the Vital Force
  • That which gives rise to, imbues with life,
holds, sustains and animates all that ISthat to
which all returns, that which encompasses all.
? possible term the Vital Field
  • Universal spirit, universal intelligence,
universal awareness, Interbeing, the is-ness of
    everything
  • ? What Einstein referred to as the deepest
    musicality a bare
nothingness that feels very intimate (Dorothy
    Holt)
  • The silent energising core at the centre of every
    level, our deepest nature that
    runs through all levels
  • as always an image communicates more than
    words.

33
  • THE LEVELS
  • Level 1 Name
  • Level 2 Fact (local modalities)
  • Level 3 Emotions
  • --------------------------------------------------
    -------
  • Level 4 Delusions, Dreams, Deep fears
  • --------------------------------------------------
    -------
  • Level 5 Sensation
  • 5A KINGDOM
  • 5B SUBKINGDOM
  • 5C SOURCE
  • Level 6 Energy
  • Seventh level

34
  • Name
  • Facts
  • Emotion
  • Delusion
  • SENSATION
  • Energy
  • Seventh

35
And within the medium of words a poet
communicates better than any other
  • Earth mothering air, air wild
  • Wound in thee, in thee isled.
  • Hold hard, fast fold thy child.
  • There lives the dearest freshness deep down
    things
  • Gerald Manley Hopkins

36
Listening to, and from, this deepest level
  • Is to be curious without conclusions,
involves a listening that finds its peace in
    emptiness, its rudder in unknowing
  • Dorothy Holt (poet)
  • Involves a looking free of all speculation,
    reasoning, interpretation or evaluation..
  • though your windows are open on the world,
  • you are not compelled by it
  • Thich Nhat Hanh

37
so that .through the activity of
looking, reality reveals itself
  • Thich Nhat Hanh

38
On how to read the Alethiometer
  • Northern Lights, by Philip Pullman

39
  • My own take We cant think this one up it
    thought us up!
  • Always important to remind ourselves that
  • the entire universe was created without the
benefit of a single human thought.
    (Adyashanti)

40
What in the world is happening in the
homeopathic consultation?
  • Level 1 A Homeopathic Consultation
  • Level 2 Two meet. One expresses, one listens
  • Level 3 curiosity,apprehension,fear,interest,gri
    ef,joy ..ultimately a mutual trusting
  • Level 4 That the two are entirely separate.
That one has a problem needing fixed, and the
other the ability to fix it
  • Level 5 The sensation is that of the remedy
    expressing itself through human form
  • Level 6 The energy is that of the remedy coming
    into expression
  • Level 7 the place from which the homeopath
takes the case, and from which the patient
    describes his state. RS
  • The what in the world that is happening in the
Homeopathic meeting is in fact the oneness, the
entirety of the REMEDY manifesting in the
activity of one expressing and another receiving

41
The Kingdoms and the termNon Human specific
  • The other world is non-human, like a stranger
within us who has been there so long he thinks he
    owns the place.
  • It can only be observed, not deduced, because
    the sensation is experiential.
  • Rajan Sankaran

42
  • For men are homesick in their homes
  • And strangers under the sun
  • And they lay their head in a foreign land
  • Whenever the day is done
  • G.K. Chesterton

43
Thich Nhat Hanh the cosmos in us
  • In the sub-atomic realm each particle is
affected by all the other particles, and even by
the mind of the observing scientist. In fact all
particles are dependant upon all the other
particles, and none have a separate
    individuality.
  • Every particle is made up of all the others

44
KINGDOM DIFFERENTIATION (at level of Sensation)
  • MINERAL KINGDOM
  • Structure, Function
  • Complete / Incomplete
  • What do I LACK?
  • PLANT KINGDOM
  • Sensitivity / Reactivity
  • What AFFECTS me?
  • ANIMAL KINGDOM
  • Predator / Prey
  • WHO affects me?

45
The Kingdom Spectrum
  • The three main kingdoms (Animal, Plant and
Mineral) overlap and wondrously inter-are. How
    could they not ?
  • Three Primary colours are RED, YELLOW and
    BLUE.
  • Primary Kingdoms are ANIMAL, PLANT and
    MINERAL.
  • The Kingdom spectrum as a rainbow of subtle
variations of all related shades and colours.

46
SENSATION level
  • 5 A Kingdom language
  • 5 B Sub-kingdom language
  • 5 C Source language
  • When it is SOURCE language they couldnt even
    think
  • of such a perfect pattern, and the pattern is
    everywhere,
  • throughout all the levels, and once you see it
  • you cannot see anything else
  • Anne Vervacke

47
Triangulationof
  • WORDS
  • AND
  • GESTURE

48
  • DELUSION
  • expressed in WORD
  • SENSATION
  • A Kingdom
  • B Subkingdom
  • C Source
  • ENERGY
  • expressed by GESTURE

49
Words to note(RS)
  • M ovement, gesture
  • N on human specific
  • O bdurate
  • P ictures, images (spontaneous)
  • Q ueer, out of context
  • R epeated
  • S ynonyms, autonyms

50
  • When we are grappling to express some profound
truth in ourself, our speech often becomes
    faltering, full of holes
  • Denise Taylor
  • (teacher of drama and movement)

51
At what point to ask re gesture?(RS)
  • Too early and the patient is puzzled
  • Just relax and observe and allow the same gesture
(or its opposite) to be repeated again and again
  • Then ask at the point where he is unable to
    describe further except with gesture
  • The point where he makes a gesture and (too)
    quickly gives a logical explanation

52
How to ask re Gesture (RS)
  • The question to the patient about gesture should
be framed so that thinking is stopped and
    spontaneity encouraged
  • Never ask What are you doing, can you
    explain,etc
  • Focus on the gesture and ask the patient
  • just to DO the gesture
  • while forgetting the context,
  • and then ask Please, just speak whatever comes
    to mind.

53
No either / orany more! Gesture AND Words
54
CASE - TAKING
  • Where are we listening from?

55
The question to ask is Am I in an
unconditioned place where I can be really
available to what is happening?Adyashanti
56
What is the nature of this HOMEOPATHS particular
fixity?
57
Sensation is the WHAT of the case
  • Miasm is the HOW or HOW MUCH of the case

58
THE MIASMS ACUTE Panic - sudden and
extreme TYPHOID Crisis PSORA Steady
(slight) struggle MALARIA Harassed RINGWORM
Trying SYCOSIS Fixed and
avoiding TUBERCULAR Hectic LEPROSY Shunne
d CANCER Control SYPHILIS Hopeless and
extreme
59
  • Aphorism 83
  • This individualising examination of a disease
case, for which I am giving only
    general instructions here,
  • demands nothing of the practitioner except
  • freedom from bias
  • and healthy senses,
  • attention while observing,
  • and fidelity in recording...
  • the image of the disease."

60
EMPTY
  • of prejudice (no picking and choosing)
  • of effort (trusting rather than striving)
  • of your own, and other peoples, ideas

61
  • I am content to be the one who does not know.
The patient is the one who does know.
  • Rajan Sankaran

62
  • The great way is only closed
  • to he who picks and chooses.
  • Third Zen Patriarch

63
  • Homeopathy doesnt belong to anyone. It is one
of the ways in which life heals itself.
  • Ian Watson
  • The Tao of Homeopathy

64
CONNECT
  • with that which is to be cured in the patient

65
Let what is misty stay mystery
  • The artist Matisse states that
  • In art, truth and reality begin when you no
longer understand anything you do or know.
  • The poet Keats speaks of the value of
  • negative capability when a man is capable of
    being in
  • uncertainties, mysteries, doubts,
  • without any irritable reaching out after facts
    and reason.

66
  • Only from a place of loving, unconditional
acceptance can true healing take place
  • what we resist, persists.
  • what we accept, dissolves.
  • Ian Watson

67
Look , listen,..and ask GESTURE
WORD THE PATIENT, not your own
mind
  • As the method becomes more skilful it becomes
quieter, with less of a drilling away at one
    area.
  • If resistance persists back off.
  • As Jayesh says, the house has many windows.
  • Relax, you will see the same through all of
    them.
  • If one window is closed, go to another.
  • If the front door is wide open sail in and
    celebrate together!

68
Homeopathy begins and ends with pattern
matching
  • Jonathan Shore

69
  • When we listen in this way - the pattern
    matching happens by itself, as
  • that which needs to be cured
  • that which is curative in the remedy
  • reveal themselves as one.

70
So the REMEDY is process, cause and fruit
of the case-taking.
71
  • The best homeopath does nothing but create the
space within which a person remembers how to heal
    himself
  • Ian Watson
  • The Tao of Homeopathy

72
There are of course two journeys travelling
alongside
  • The individual journey with each patient in each
    consultation.
  • Our own unique journey over time as homeopaths.

73
Thich Nhat Hanh
  • If we feel there is someone we cannot help, it is
only because we have not yet looked deeply enough
    into his or her circumstances.
  • If we open our hearts freely, but do not know our
own limitations, our own seeds of agitation will
be watered and we will become overwhelmed.

74
  • Precision (wisdom)
  • Loving-kindness (compassion)
  • Letting go (emptiness)

75
Thich Nhat Hanh(from Understanding Our Mind)
  • When we realise that afflictions are no other
    than enlightenment,
  • We can ride the waves of birth and death in
    peace,
  • Travelling in the boat of compassion on the sea
    of delusion,
  • Smiling the smile of non-fear.

76
  • Thay advises us
  • Maintain your health.
  • Be joyful.
  • Do not force yourself to do things you cannot
    do.

77
Looking, listening, living from the Seventh Level
78
And so to a case
  • No ideas but in things. Dont give me an
editorial of general ideas just give me a for
    instance
  • William Carlos Williams
