• The Viking ship was all-important, it was much
  more than a form of transport
• They loved their ships and even wrote songs and
  poems about them

Life on a longship

• longships were fast and powerful and could cross
  seas and oceans or sail along shallow rivers 1m
  deep
• When there was no wind or if it was blown in the
  wrong direction, the sailors would have to row
• The pine deck kept the goods dry, water was
  stored in barrels and the main food was either
  dried or salted fish and meat, no food could be
  cooked

Warriors

• As well as the farmers there was another kind of
  Viking-the berserker
• These were warriors who fought like madmen, with
  no fear of harm to themselves

Warriors

• They may have chewed fly agaric, a poisonous
  toadstool to work themselves into a hypnotic
  trance

• Before a battle, berserkers would scream, grind
  their teeth and bite the edges of their shields
• Whatever the cause of their behaviour these
  fighters were best avoided
