3PowerPoint provides
- a way to keep students focused on the item you
are talking about during a presentation - a stimulating visual approach to augment lessons
- a product that is easy to use
- a powerful tool to bring out points of view
- a way to clearly present information to make an
impact
4Right Now...
- Please write down 5 things that you would like to
learn about PowerPoint - As I go through the presentation I hope to be
able to answer all of them. - At the end of the session we will discuss and
hopefully answer any that are left
5To Start PowerPoint
- Move the cursor to the start menu
6Starting PowerPoint
- Go up to the top of the start menu and click on
New Office Document - Click on Blank Presentation
7Opening PowerPoint
- You will see the screen on your right
- The slide layout that has the darker border
around it is the one selected. - The default is a Title slide
8Each page in PowerPoint
- Is called a slide
- Each slide may be formatted differently
- may include photos, clipart, graphs, internet
sites, videos or just about anything else - You can change the colors or apply an automatic
design to your presentation. - Lets start creating a presentation!
9Double click on highlighted slide or click OK
10You will come to this slide
11Follow the directions - Click on the areas and
type!
- For the present you may use the title My First
PowerPoint Presentation! - In the subtitle area give yourself credit for the
outstanding presentation viewers will be treated
to. - When you are done with the title slide click on
the new slide icon on the toolbar, go to insert
pull down menu,or press controlM to create a new
slide.
12Methods to get a new slide.
New Slide Button
Insert Menu
Or Control M
13You will be again presented with this screen
14Different Layouts
- Take a look at the different layouts.
- You can include bullets, graphs, photos clipart,
etc. - These formats are commonly used and are
automatically formatted for you. - You can change these at will or create your own
original designs by using the blank option.
15Youve Probably noticed by now
- That all of the information on my slides does not
appear at the same time. - If it did there would be mass confusion as some
of you would read ahead and get really confused - You can control it so each bullets or items
appearance is controlled by you! - You will have your students in the palm of your
hand!
16In order to show you how this works Create a
couple of slides using bullet formats.
- Click on New Slide or press ControlM
- Select format by double-clicking on bullet format
or by highlighting one and pressing enter or
clicking on . - Then type away!
17It is time to look at the bottom left corner of
your screen.
- The icon furthest left is the slide view which is
what you are in. - The icon with lines is the outline view which
gives you a view of your printed material. - The 4 rectangles is your slide sorter view.
18- The rectangle with lines underneath is your notes
view - The icon furthest right is your slide show view -
you will use this to view your presentation - I
am in this mode right now! - The next slide will show you ideas of the
different views.

20- Click on the Slide Sorter Icon or go to the view
pull down menu and select Slide Sorter. - You will be presented with something that looks
like this
21Slide sorter is where you make the magic happen!
- Select your slides by highlighting them one at a
time while holding the shift key down. - When they are all selected go up to the Slide
Show Menu. - Select Preset Animation and chose one of the
options there by releasing the mouse. - Notice that there is now a little graphic under
each selected slide.
22Going Into Slide Show Mode!
- First click on your first slide in the Slide
Sorter view - Either click on the slide show icon on the left
bottom of the screen or go to Slide Show Menu at
the top and select View Show - Voila! Its show time!
23View your Presentation by clicking on Slide Show
Icon
- You move from slide to slide by clicking the
mouse, pressing enter or using the arrow keys. - Each bullet should appear individually as you
move through your presentation.
24Youve probably also noticed
- There has been a different transition between
each slide in this presentation. - This is achieved through the slide sorter view
- You click on the transition button.
25- You will get this window
- You can look at your options by going through the
menus and selecting them.
26- You can apply a transition or effect to one slide
or all. - Go to slide show and view the effect.
- If you are not satisfied with the results, go
back and repeat the steps. - You always have the flexibility of changing your
slides or your presentation. - Most of that is done through the slide sorter
view.
27Inserting Graphics
- You should be at the point where you want to
insert a photo, graphic or clipart. - Go up to the insert menu on the toolbar.
- For practice select Picture and under that
Clipart - Look through the selections and double click on
something you want.
28Continuing to insert graphics
- This will automatically insert it into your slide
where you can resize it, move it add to it or
delete it. - Heres one of my favorite
- clips!
- I mean, honestly we all
- sometimes feel this way!
29Moving Objects from foreground to background
- Sometime you will want to put a photo or a piece
of clip art behind the printing - Insert the graphic into one of your slides that
has writing in it. - click on the graphic again
- click on Draw in the lower left corner
Keep your eye on this man!
30The Draw Menu
- The graphic you pasted into your slide should
obliterate the writing - You have many options but for now go to order.
Select Send to Back while you have the graphic
highlighted. - Notice that the man here is blocking the words
- But now he is behind the words
31It is tricky!
- It is always tricky with color and color on your
slides to have the reading legible with graphics
in the background. - You need to alter the text color or reposition
the graphic. - In order to change the text color - highlight
what you want to change - then click on the
bottom toolbar where the letter A is
32Changing Text Color
- When you click on the A you get options of
colors. You can select a color that might go
better with your graphic. - Most of the time it would be easier to use a
slide format that would let you put the graphic
to the side!
33Changing Background color!
- You can change the color of your background by
going to the Format Menu and selecting
Background - This box will appear
- The drop down menu
- gives you more choices
34Inserting a chart
- A very quick way to insert a chart is to select
one of the chart options on the new slide window. - You get this canned chart.
- All you have to do is modify the data.
35How to Make A Quick Chart
- The window with the chart looks like this
36- Simply change the data in this area (this is a
small spreadsheet from which the chart is made)
37Here is the same chart altered!
- This is the number of different colored MMsâ
that were in two small bags. - Please note No candies were harmed in this
study!
38Adding video
- Of course you can add video clips to your
presentation - A word of caution - video take up an enormous
amount of memory - it makes your presentations
much less portable
- Go out to a site that you know contains
downloadable video clips - You can do a quick search for free video clips on
a search engine like Yahoo
39Downloading Video or Audio
- You should always save the file you are
downloading to your hardrive - I set up a folder titled Net Downloads so
anything I download from the Internet goes there
- that way I dont spend extra time searching - Once you have a video clip select a slide format
that allows you to enter a video
40In a Media Clip Slide
- I double clicked on the right hand side and this
box came up -
I directed it to where my video clip was stored
and my laptop crashed 2 times!!! I gave up and
went to the insert menu, put in the office CD and
got a clip from there!
41Inserting A MS Office Clip
- Put Office CD in drive
- Got to Insert Menu
- Click on Insert Movie from Gallery
- Select one you like by double clicking
- You can re-size it but it does lose quality when
it fills more of the screen up
42Copying Files from Office CD to Hard Drive
- In order not to be dependent on the CD ROM you
need to copy the animation slides onto your hard
drive. I put them in the same folder I saved my
presentation in. - I found them in the Media folder on the CD ROM
43Heres another for July!
44There are ways to attach sounds
- There are many variables involved in adding music
and sound into a PowerPoint presentation so to do
it as a class would be difficult - it also takes
up memory - It is easier if you have the sound file on your
hard drive - Ill be more than happy to work with you on this
on an individual basis
45You can Use Templates in PowerPoint
- You can click on the Format Menu and select Apply
Design - By Clicking through the options on the left you
can preview their looks - Saves you a lot of trouble formatting
- Try applying some of them to your PowerPoint
presentation!!! Have Fun!
