Firefighter I and II Prerequisites
  • Students must be age 16 or older on the first day
    of the course.
  • Students must be proficient in reading, writing,
    and speaking English.
  • Students must provide proof of insurance on the
    first day of class.

Firefighter I and II
  • Students must be able to communicate, function
    independently, and perform without requiring
    assistance.
  • Students shall be able to demonstrate all
    essential task/competencies, and maintain
    acceptable attendance and course participation.

Firefighter I
  • Students must successfully complete EMS-approved
    courses in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR),
    first aid, and Hazardous Materials Awareness.

Firefighter II
  • Students must successfully complete the Hazardous
    Materials Operations course.

Firefighter I and II
  • Students are required to keep a clean and neat
    appearance and abide by all clothing and PPE
    (personal protective equipment) guidelines set
    forth by the Virginia Department of Fire
    Programs, the school, and the instructor.
  • Students are required to be free from the
    influence of drugs and alcohol.

  • Currently, the VDOE offers a single
    task/competency list for the Firefighter I, II,
    III program, representing two full years of
    instruction.
  • Effective 2008-2009, the VDOE will realign its
    Firefighter program to mirror the VDFP
    Firefighter I and II certification standards.

  • Firefighter I and Firefighter II will represent
    two distinct courses with different
    task/competency lists.
  • Firefighter III will no longer be offered.

Firefighter I and II
  • The VDOE is exploring the potential for creating
    an Introduction to Emergency Services course that
    would encourage students to enroll in and prepare
    for Firefighter I as well as additional public
    safety, health, and medical sciences programs.
