  • There are three types of tigers in the world
and two types live in our country. They live in
the forests. They are becoming fewer and fewer
because the trees are cut down by the farmers,
and the tigers have no place to hide. Some people
even hunt them to make money, because their fur
and bones are worth a lot of money.

Pandas
12
  • Pandas can be found in the wild only in
China. Others are all in the zoo. Now, Pandas in
other countries are all from our country. They
eat a lot of tender bamboo every day. Now there
are few places left for them to live in. Our
country sets up some research centers and nature
    parks to protect them.

antelopes
17
  • The animals in the picture are beautiful
antelopes. They live in the wild in Tibet. In the
recent years the number of them is becoming
smaller and smaller because they are hunted by
some people for their fur and wool.

  • Why is it important to make sure that animals
    do not die out?
  • If animals and plants die out, we will not be
able to survive. All animals and plants are
necessary if we want healthy ecosystems. We need
the animals and plants for medical and

24
  • commercial purposes. We also have a moral
responsibility to make sure that we do not cause
other animals to die out because of our dominance
    on the planet.

25
  • What can we do to help endangered animals?
  • We should protect their habitats. If we
persuade farmers to cut fewer trees, the animals
    will have larger habitats.

26
  • We should make some rules to
  • forbid anyone to kill animals. Especially some
rare species. At the same time, we must get the
farmers to learn more about animals and the
environment and know how important animals are in
    our daily life.

27
  • We should set up some new habitats for the
animals so that they can live comfortably and
    have more babies.
  • We should control the selling and buying
    animals.

32
Speaking
  • Sample dialogues 1

A a reporter B a tiger
A Would you mind my asking you some questions?
B Of course not. A How long have you been
living in the zoo?
33
  • B Oh, I came here, let me see, six years ago. I
used to live in a forest, but people there cut
down all the trees and I had to move. There were
cities and people everywhere, so I had no place
to go. The police came and took me to the zoo.

34
  • A Do you like living in the zoo?
  • B Well, its not as good as being free, thats
for sure. But at least I have food and friends.
  • A I see. If you could say something to all the
human beings in the world, what would you tell
    them?
  • B I would tell them to stop being so

35
  • selfish. We all need each other and we
should try to be friends. If people cut down
trees and pollute the environment to make money,
we will all suffer. And dont kill animals to
make clothes---when I see people wearing furs at
the zoo I get really angry.
  • A Thank you.

36
  • Sample dialogues 2
  • A a reporter B an elephant

A Nice to meet you. B Nice to meet you, too.
A May I ask you some questions? B Sure. Go
ahead. A Where did you live before they brought
you here?
37
  • B I used to live in a great forest in South
    Africa.
  • A How long have you lived in the zoo?
  • B About two years.
  • A Do you prefer living in the zoo or living in
    the jungle?
  • B I prefer living in the jungle.
  • A Can you tell us why?

38
  • B Yes. The zoo is too small for me. I cant run,
and I cant see my friends. I miss them very
much. And I think the climate is also a problem
for me. Its hard for me to get used to it.
  • A If you could say something to all humans, what
    would you tell them?

39
  • B I would tell them not to destroy forests, and
not to kill too many of us any more in the
future. I dont think this is a good thing for
    them.
  • A Do you think you can go back to your home one
    day?
  • B I dont know. I know that people are trying to
let us go back to our

40
  • home some day, but first of all, they must
    protect the environment.
  • A I know that human beings have already started
to protect the environment. I think you can go
back to your home some day.
  • B I hope so.

41
Homework
  • 1. Read about the Talking part on P139, try to
understand it and work in groups of four.
Everybody should choose one animal and complete
    your role card.
  • 2. Collect some information and pictures about
    pollution.
