Title: Having Impact

1
Having Impact
  • Setting Goals Measurable Objectives

2
This presentation draws from the work of
  • Shattuck and Associates, Inc.
  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

3
Goals and Objectives
  • Goals and objectives are paramount to good
    program planning evaluation.
  • They provide the direction you need to DESIGN and
    to EVALUATE your program.

4
Goals
  • Describe what you hope to bring about.
  • May be written as general statements, not
    immediately measurable.

5
Sample Goal
  • Ensure that all students
  • receive daily physical activity.
  • Ensure that all students receive
  • adequate Health Education.
  • Ensure that all students have
  • healthy food choices.

6
Objectives
  • Intermediate steps or milestones that need to be
achieved by a specific target group in order to
    meet a goal.
  • Written as intended outcomes for the target group
that is, what the target group will know or be
able to do as a result of your efforts.

7
Sample Objective
  • By September 30th, 2010, 25 of the elementary
schools in our system will offer daily Physical
    Activity for all students.

8
Objectives are NOT
  • Tactics or tasks undertaken by your team.
  • An example of a tactic/task
  • Provide staff development regarding the benefits
    of daily physical Activity.
  • An example of an objective
  • By October 2010, 25 of all students will be
    offered opportunity for daily P.A.

9
S.M.A.R.T. Obejectivs
  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Appropriate
  • Realistic
  • Time Specific

10
S Specific Objectives
  • Specify target
  • Specify intended outcome
  • Focus on only one action or outcome at a time
  • Avoid vague verbs
  • (e.g., know, understand)

11
M Measurable Objectives
  • Have baseline to measure change
  • Use baseline to determine indicator of success
  • For example
  • Increase from 10 to 15 the number of students
who can complete a mile in under 15 minutes.

12
A Appropriate Objectives
  • Advance your teams goal
  • Identify a specific target group
  • Are inclusive of diversity within your target
    group

13
R Realistic Objectives
  • Are important to stakeholders
  • Are a do-able stretch
  • Are adequately resourced

14
T Time Specific Objectives
  • Provide a timeframe indicating when the objective
    will be met or measured
  • By 10/1/10, 35 of school districts in (state)
will report having integrated nutrition education
    into the curriculum.

15
Remember Tactics (activities) are not SMART
Objectives
  • SMART Objectives answer these question
  • Who is the target group?
  • What will the target group achieve?
  • When will they achieve it?

16
Tactics v. Objectives
  • Tactic Create and distribute information packets
to elementary school principals outlining the
benefits of daily recess periods for elementary
    school students.

17
Objectives say what you want, not what you will
do.
  • To distinguish between a tactic and an objective,
    ask yourself the following questions
  • Who is the target group?
  • Elementary Schools
  • What will the target group achieve?
  • Daily recess periods will be implemented
  • (vs. packets will be distributed, which is a
    tactic!)
  • When will they achieve it?
  • 10/31/10

18
Tactics v. Objectives
  • Objective By 10/31/10, 40 of elementary schools
will have implemented daily recess periods for
    elementary school students.

19
Sample Goal ? Objective ? Tactic
  • Your Goal is to ensure that elementary students
get adequate the physical activity on a daily
    basis.
  • Your SMART Objective might be By 10/31/10, 40
of elementary schools will have implemented daily
recess periods for elementary school students.
  • One of your Tactics might be By 5/15/10, create
    distribute packets to elementary school
principals educating them about the benefits of
daily recess periods for elementary school
    students.
