Language Learning Advisory Service
  • The Language Learning Advisory Service (LLAS) is
    open to ALL City University students who wish to
    find out how to self-study in the Self-Access
    Centre (G2513, 2nd Floor Greenzone , City
    University).
  • Students can come and meet our friendly Language
    Learning Advisors and ask for help to develop
    their English skills and ask for help with using
    the resources in the Self-Access Centre on a
    one-to-one basis.
  • The LLAS is made up of a group of fully qualified
    English teachers from the English Language Centre
    who are available during the day time and one or
    two evenings.

What do Language Learning Advisors do ?
  • We help guide students to
  • Select appropriate resources for self-study
  • Make a Study Plan

Role of Language Learning Advisor
  • Offer language advice
  • Help students identify their strengths and
    weaknesses and their language needs
  • Help students make a study plan if students wish
    to make one
  • To guide students in choosing resources in the
    SAC

A Language Learning Advisor does not
  • Proofread
  • act as a teacher - instead he/she guides you by
    offering language advice e.g to become aware of
    learner strategies, choose suitable resources
  • do your homework

Role of Student
  • To decide which language area(s) need improvement
  • To select appropriate materials based on the
    resources in the SAC
  • To make his/her own study plan BEFORE seeing a
    Language Learning Advisor
  • To ask for language advice when he/she needs help
    eg. can't understand a grammar point, can't find
    a book or relevant worksheet, checking an essay
  • To complete all work on his/her own
  • Be an independent learner.

What is a Study Plan?
  • It is similar to making a contract. You plan what
    you want to study OR which area / skill you want
    to improve or develop
  • AND
  • the Language Learning Advisor can help you
    identify which areas in your English need
    improvement. In other words, he/she can help you
    spot the strengths and weaknesses of your
    English.

The Study Plan is unique to YOU
  • The Study Plan is unique to YOU
  • You plan when and how much time to study
    English.
  • You can study for 1 hour or more its up to
    YOU.
  • WHAT, WHEN, and HOW you study should be
    decided by YOU
  • If you need help with selecting appropriate
    resources, you can ask the Language Learning
    Advisor for help.
