Title: Drugs and Their Effects'

1
Drugs and Their Effects.
2
So what are drugs?
A drug is anything that alters the way in which
living things work.
  • Drugs can be very useful e.g.
  • Antibiotics attack bacteria
  • Heroin can be used for pain relief

Drug Abuse occurs when drugs are used for
non-medical purposes. Some drugs are addictive
(this means the person using the drug is
physically dependent on it).
Removing the drug can cause withdrawal symptoms,
such as dizziness, vomiting and hallucinations.
The body also develops a tolerance to the drug so
the addict needs to increase the dose to get the
same effect.

Solvents
  • Solvents are liquids that dissolve things.
  • Some solvents give off fumes.
  • Inhaling these fumes can affect brain function,
causing a light- headed feeling and
    hallucinations.
  • Solvents are sedatives, slowing down the bodys
    reactions.
  • They can damage the brain, the heart, the
kidneys, the liver and the lungs.
  • Abusers may become unconscious, vomit, then
    suffocate.

4
Alcohol
  • Alcoholic drinks contain alcohol (ethanol), which
    affects the brain.
  • Alcohol is also a sedative, and can make the
    drinker more confident and relaxed.
  • However, it also slows down reactions, judgement
suffers and the ability to concentrate is
    reduced.
  • The body starts to lose control over
    coordination, causing dizziness, slurred speech
    and difficulty walking.
  • A drunk may become argumentative and aggressive.
  • Eventually, unconsciousness and even death can
    occur.
  • The depressive effects of alcohol are the reason
that it is always best to avoid alcohol when
driving and never exceed the limit.
