• 3-tiered architecture
• One database server
• One or more application servers
• Many clients
• 2-tiered architecture
• Database and application server combined

• Common for small organizations
• 4-tiered architecture
• Adds an accessibility or services tier between
  application and presentation tiers
• Used to manage Internet access (Internet
  Transaction Server or ITS)

Application Servers

• Each application server is considered an SAP
  instance
• Can have multiple instances of a component (i.e.
  R/3) for load balancing and fault tolerance
• Each SAP product (R/3, SCM, CRM, etc.) usually
  runs on a different application server (i.e. a
  different instance)
• SAP Web Application Server is called SAP Basis or
  Basis Layer
• Provides the glue that integrates all the SAP
  instances
• Manages resources
• Provides links to outside applications

Internet Access

• Access to backend solutions is provided via HTTP
  by adding a services layer in the form of a
  separate middleware product called Internet
  Transaction Server (ITS) which currently is built
  into the Web AS but can be separate
• ITS translates SAP GUI communications into HTTP
