Conquering Poverty through Education Here at EUMC

The EUMC Tutoring Program is a community outreach
program that provides one on one tutoring to
children in grades K through 6 followed by dinner
for the students, their families, and the tutors.
The program takes place Wednesday evening
November through May. The students in the
program attend either College Place Elementary or
Edmonds Elementary and are chosen to participate
by the students teacher and principal. Each
year 45-55 volunteers participate in the tutoring
program as tutors, substitute tutors, snack
providers, cooks, clean up crew, and
coordinators. The program volunteers are
recruited from the church and the community
through articles in the Guidelights, Beyond
Sunday Morning, and word of mouth.

Julia Bolz is a powerful voice for the
voiceless. In 1998, she traded a successful
career in law to help people in the worlds most
impoverished regions. With funds raised by
communities across the country, she and her
American teammates have defied all odds by
building and supplying 17 large, new schools and
repairing 16 others, serving about 25,000 Afghan
students. They also

have provided wells distributed text-books,
school supplies and athletic equipment provided
teacher trainings and set up libraries, computer
centers and PTAs. The transformation they have
seen in communities is not simply good, but
phenomenal. Julia and her teammates are not
simply interested in building schools but
building relationships between Afghans and
Americans, as well as creating global citizens.
Uniquely, thousands of Americans are journeying
with them. She regularly speaks around the
country, writes about her experiences, and meets
with political decision-makers. Through
photos, stories and a show tell, Julia will
bring the Afghan culture to life and share her
work and experiences in Afghanistan. She will
also help us understand how education is a
building block to eliminating poverty, oppression
and extremism in the developing world and how
each of us can personally make a difference.
How Clean Water Helps Children Get to School
Water 1sts mission is to serve families in the
poorest communities in the world as they
implement community-managed projects that
integrate water supply, sanitation, and health
education. We envision a world free of extreme
poverty. Providing people with safe water
systems, latrines, and hygiene education is the
1st step to ending the cycle of poverty and
death. The lack of access to safe drinking water
and sanitary latrines is the top public health
problem in the world and the number-one killer of
children in the world. Lack of access to clean
water has a devastating effect on women and girls
who are traditionally responsible for water
collection.
