Host City
  • Wollongong
  • is the 3rd largest city in the state of New South
    Wales after Sydney and Newcastle. It is located
    in the Illawarra region of the east coast of
    Australia, 82 kilometres (51 mi) south of Sydney
    which can be reached through a scenic coastal
    road and rail route which takes between 90 and
    120 minutes. Wollongong is home to 263,535
    people and has unique coastal geography.

Host University
  • University of Wollongong
  • is a public university with approximately 22,000
    students.
  • The Wollongong Campus is located on the New South
    Wales coast, 80km south of Sydney and 3km from
    the centre of Wollongong. The campus combines a
    tranquil bushland setting with modern,
    state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure
    that provides the perfect environment for
    learning. A comprehensive range of undergraduate
    and postgraduate courses are offered across nine
    faculties.

Program Overview
  • ARTS 201 Regional Australian Society and
    Environment A Field Study
  • This short courses provide an opportunity to
    explore the Australian landscape, cultural and
    social issues through field based intensive three
    week study.
  • The initial orientation will be held at the
    University of Wollongong and will consist of
    lectures, presentations, seminars, films and
    workshops. The orientation is designed to build
    the broad context for the case studies, introduce
    the studies to be undertaken and the locations
    and procedures for the fieldwork. The fieldwork
    will be conducted over ten days. Debriefing,
    analysis, writing and presentation will occupy
    the last part of the program.

  • Dates June 21 - July 11, 2009
  • Classes
  • ARTS 201- Regional Australian Society and
    Environment introduces students to a range of
    environmental and social issues relevant to
    understanding contemporary regional Australian
    society. It covers the natural and the social
    issues and examines both wider Australian and
    indigenous aspects of environment and society.

Credit Transfer Information
  • This course has not been pre-approved for credit.
  • It is the responsibility of the student to speak
    with their faculty advisor about credit transfer.
  • Credit transfer is done by the Faculty and is not
    guaranteed.

Accommodation
  • Accommodation will be provided in the UOW
    Residences during the Orientation program. For
    the field studies, students will be accommodated
    in either university-managed accommodation or
    dorm/hostel style accommodation.

Program Costs
  • Cost to the U of A 150.00 CND- Application fee
  • Cost to the University of Wollongong 4,700.00
    (4163.00 CND) The fee includes tuition, all
    accommodation and most meals all program ground
    travel within Australia an orientation program
    pre-departure materials and airport shuttle
    services. The fee does not include airfares to or
    from Australia. June/July 2009 fee includes
    airfares within Australia.

Application Process
  • Attend one of the mandatory group advising
    sessions for Summer Abroad in France.
  • Submit completed application to Education Abroad
    Program by March 16th, 2008.
  • If you are selected to participate in program you
    will then be required to complete the application
    to the University of Wollongong.

Application Requirements
  • GPA requirements
  • 2.7 current
  • 2.5 cumulative
  • If you are in the Faculty of Science you must
    have completed 15 of course work at the time of
    application.
