• Though the community party appears dead in the
  water it is interesting that under President
  Putin he operates like an old style Soviet
  leader. As the article says above his campaign is
  reminiscent of the Soviet era. As an ex KGB
  officer this may not be surprising. It should not
  be to us either as God says he will turn them
  back which in my opinion is turning them back to
  their anti west, communistic, authoritarian ways.

• Vladimir Putin came to office in the year 2000
  and has been steadily increasing his power and
  influence over many key aspects of Russia. The
  media has been neutered, tycoons unwilling to toe
  the Kremlin line exiled or jailed. He invented
  the United Russia party which now means he
  controls the Duma, allowing him to change the
  constitution at will. We are surely seeing a
  strong King of the North being prepared.

• Again interesting to see Russia warning the US of
  imperialism. Russia believes in a multi polar
  world not uni polar. In other words there should
  not be one super power but at least 2. Putin may
  declare this to his own people in a phone-in at
  the moment but we know a time is coming when
  Russia will very publicly make this view known
  when it comes down like a storm to cover the
  land.

  they put up some unknown men of their choice to

  challenged Russia over the health
  of its democracy yesterday in Washington's most

  Powell said Russian politics were not adequately
  bound to the rule of law and suggested there were
  limits to Washington's relationship with Moscow.

• This is surely of interest. Weeks before the
  Russian presidential elections the US is
  indicating that there are limits to its
  relationship with Russia. The article also
  mentioned Russias heavy handedness in Chechnya
  and especially Georgia. The article has Cold War
  echoes some have said. We should watch this
  tension between these 2 powers as we know they
  will be drawn into battle over Israel.

  preparing their largest manoeuvres in two
  decades, an exercise involving the test-firing of

  apparently aimed at demonstrating the revival of
  the nation's military might and come ahead of
  Russian elections in March.

• Following his visit to Moscow this week Colin
  Powell US Secretary of State wrote that certain
  developments in Russian politics and foreign
  policy in recent months have given us pause. We
  have mentioned Russia's increasing authoritarian
  stance and this nuclear exercise this show /

  bomb explosion that tore through a packed

  killing at least 39 people. Rescuers last night

  was the worst ever on Moscow's famed metro
  system.

• Russia still has a huge army in Chechnya. Putin
  has vowed to eliminate this terrorism that he
  says emanates from this area. It is probable in
  my opinion that this is where the Russian forces
  will descend from as it is the direct route down
  to Israel. It is interesting that a new fault
  line politically has developed between the US and
  Russia over Georgia. BBC online says that Russia
  is annoyed with US presence there. Bush last week
  called for Russia to remove is military from

  missiles went wrong when fired from a submarine.
• American military planners may take some

  over the coming months as the former Cold War
  enemies skirmish over influence in central Asia

  minister yesterday, demonstrating his
  determination to exclude potential rivals.

  European Union, will take over from Mikhail
  Kasyanov, a liberal, who was sacked last week.
• Comment
• The editorial comment in the Daily Telegraph had
  a heading Tsar Putins power lust. The article
  went on to say that Putin has transformed the
  political landscape in Russia.. The victim under
  Putin has been Russias experiment with liberal
  democracy. The parliament has been turned into a
  rubber stamp, the media suppressed and he has
  given prominence to those with KGB links. It then
  asks the question What then can halt the further
  rise of this latter day tsar? The answer may be
  the wrath of the Lord God and the return of the
  Lord Jesus. For Russian forces will come to end
  on the mountains of Israel.

  word guard comes from a word that means to

  bombings. This is an incredible claim. The FSB
  launched terror attacks on its own citizens to
  allow Putin to crush the Chechens! It seems too

  insight to Putin and his ability to have evil

• Seven eastern European states were welcomed into
  Nato by President George W Bush in Washington
  last night. The prime ministers of Estonia,
  Latvia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia
  and Slovenia attended the accession ceremony. The
  seven former members of the Soviet bloc will
  become formal members of Nato at a meeting in
  Brussels on Friday.

  this enlargement, and we will continue to
  maintain a negative attitude. It's a mistake.

  has created a kind of paranoia in Russia."

  the talk from Russia is that they are deeply

• President Jacques Chirac of France has visited
  Moscow for talks with his Russian counterpart
  Vladimir Putin. The visit began with a tour of
  the secret Titov centre near Moscow, which

  disaster in the Middle East as speculation mounts
  that Moscow sent assassins to Qatar to kill a
  former Chechen president.
• Two Russian security officials and a diplomat
  were arrested in February on suspicion of
  planting the car bomb that killed Zelimkhan
  Yandarbivev in Doha, the Qatar capital, six days
  earlier. One western official said "We have not
  seen anything as blatant as this since the end of
  the Soviet Union, where almost anything was
  possible. Only last week, Russia voted at the
  United Nations to condemn Israel's assassination
  of Sheikh Yassin, the Hamas leader. It looks like

• Chechen rebels left dozens of people dead
  yesterday after a raid in southern Russia.
• Witnesses said corpses littered the streets of
  Nazran, the capital of Ingushetia, after hours of
  intense fighting sparked by a foray by up to 200
  Chechen rebels. The gunmen seized offices of the
  interior ministry and a border guard barracks.
• Putin ordered security forces to hunt down the
  attackers. At least 57 people were believed dead,
  including Abukar Kostoyev, the acting regional
  interior minister, and other senior officials. It
  was the biggest armed operation by rebels in the
  province since war between separatists and Moscow
  erupted in Chechnya a decade ago.
• A column of military lorries and armoured
  personnel carriers brought reinforcements from
  neighbouring regions into Ingushetia.

• This area that the Chechens are invading is the
  area described in the Bible as Magog. We know
  from Ezekiel 38 that Russia (Gog) is firmly based
  in this area of land when he invades Israel. The
  fact that these Chechen rebels keep attacking in
  this area, forces Putin to keep his military in
  that region.

• It is true that Boris Berezovsky has every reason
  to complain about Putin. There have been 3
  attempts on his life by the Russian FSB over
  recent years. However despite that his comments
  are interesting. Russia under Putin is dangerous
  for Israel. Russia supports terror and even
  created it in the Middle East he says. I would
  have to agree with all these comments. The Soviet
  Union did arm the Middle East with its weapons
  for many years. Syria, Iran, Iraq etc. We now see
  at the helm of Russia a man who as we have noted

  agencies. Mr Putin a long term KGB officer,
  signed a decree reuniting them under one
  directorate.

• During the Cold War an MI5 handbook described the
  KGB as the biggest spy machine for the gathering
  of secret information the world has ever known.

  understand , this is a plan to reinstate the

  state security services, the FSB, to launch an
  investigation.

• And so it appears that for the first time since
  September 11th 2001, Muslim extremists have
  destroyed 2 planes killing many people. As one
  headline put it Is the lucky streak over for
  worlds worried airlines? The age of terror /
  fear has not gone away and we know it is only
  time before other terrible atrocities happen. We
  know from Matthew 24 that it will eventually get
  so bad that if there was not an intervention by
  our Lord Jesus that there should NO flesh be
  saved. However there will be an intervention
  he shall return. And these things mean our
  redemption draws nearer.

• Russian officials investigating the crashes of
  two passenger planes have discovered the remains
  of two Chechen women thought to be "Black Widows"
  - suicide bombers given that name because many
  have lost husbands in the war with Russia.
• Officials have also found traces of explosive in
  the wreckage of at least one of the planes, all
  but confirming the theory that the jets, which
  crashed on Tuesday night killing 90, were
  destroyed by terrorist attacks.
• Comment
• For nearly 10 years, Russia has been engaged in a
  brutal military conflict in Chechnya. There was a
  lull in actual fighting after the Russian army
  was chased out, in June 1996. Since September
  1999 Mr Putin has made it clear that he wants to
  bring an end to the conflict - but one which
  leaves no one in any doubt that Chechnya is part
  of the Russian Federation.
• The area of Chechnya is significant. It is quite
  possibly the area where the Magogites (known as
  the Scythians) lived. These people lived around
  the shores of the Black Sea. The Bible makes
  clear that Gog (Russia) will be of this area
  (Magog) when it descends on Israel. This
  terrorist attack may well increase Russias
  presence in that area.

• Russia's hostage crisis ended in a bloodbath
  yesterday, as semi-naked children fled in terror
  from a school where Chechen terrorists strapped
  with bombs had held them for three days.
• At least 200 people died in the final battle,
  which began when explosions rocked the school,
  bringing down the roof of the gymnasium. As some
  of the captive children and parents fled for
  their lives, the kidnappers tried to shoot them
  in the back.
• The Russian security forces, backed by local
  people carrying assorted weapons, immediately
  moved in to retake the school, where an estimated
  1,200 people had been held.
• Officials said the number of victims could rise
  significantly. The bodies of at least 20 children
  were seen at a morgue near School No 1 in Beslan,
  close to the republic of North Ossetia's border
  with strife-torn Chechnya.
• Up to 650 people were in hospital, about half of
  them children.
• Last week, 89 people died when two aircraft were
  destroyed in what the authorities say were
  suicide bomb attacks by Chechen militants.
• A few days later, a female suicide bomber blew
  herself up near a Moscow metro station, killing

• The utter horror of what has happened makes us
  wonder how long it can be before our Lord returns
  to intervene in this wicked world.
• On the one hand we know that a time of trouble
  such as never was is coming on the earth. And as
  we see children massacred in this way we know
  that the time of trouble is upon us and will only
  get worse. As we see these things we know our
  Lords coming must be near.
• But on the other hand we are terribly distressed
  by these things and wonder how men and women
  could possibly kill children in this way.
• It may make us not want to watch anymore. To
  try to shut out the world and take no interest in
  events that are happening. We must not let this
  happen.
• We must never forget that God is in control. His
  plan is working out.
• In relation to this terrible atrocity I think we
  can say this.
• The Lord Jesus said the world would be like the
  days just prior to the flood.That it is it would
  be full of violence. So Jesus foresaw the very
  events we are witnessing.
• The consequences of these terrorist attacks over
  the last week may well make Russia send more
  troops into Chechnya (area of Magog) which again
  we might expect.
• God is against Russia. They are a barbaric people

  country people are treated like cattle. They
  will come down to Israel.

• A spokesman for Mr Maskhadov, Ahmed Zakayev,
  described the threat as a "disturbing signal for
  civilised countries" and said it set a dangerous
  precedent.

  your soil at any moment," he said.

• The reverberations of the massacre at Beslan are
  already beginning. Just as 9/11 changed America
  and made it launch pre emptive strikes and launch
  wars, so too this tragedy in Russia may do the
  same. Russia is saying it will carry out
  pre-emptive strikes anywhere in the world. Putin
  is under increasing pressure to do something. We
  wait to see his reactions. We do know that one
  day they will invade the Middle East.

  free media in Russia who accused him political

• A month after the Beslan school siege in North
  Ossetia, in which more than 340 people died at
  the hands of mostly Chechen militants, Russia's
  reign of terror appears to be continuing in
  neighbouring Chechnya.
• The people say that execution, torture and kidnap
  are a familiar part of their lives.
• Since the Beslan attack, they have noticed a
  military build-up in the once prosperous holiday
  destination for Soviet functionaries. Less than a
  week after the siege ended in a bloodbath, a unit
  of 100 Omon (police special forces) troops was
  dispatched from Perm, in western Russia.

• Magog in the Bible is in the modern area of
  Chechnya. We are looking for Russia to be based
  there militarily. The Beslan school massacre has
  had many consequences. One of which is the
  Russian military build-up in this area. When
  Russia does come down to Israel it is almost
  certain they will come through the Caucasus

• Russia's lower house of parliament, the Duma,
  voted yesterday to overturn a ban on political
  party leaders becoming ministers, increasing
  fears that Soviet-style one-party rule could
  return.
• Opponents of the reform fear it could quickly
  crystallise existing loyalties into a one-party
  state, which was abandoned in Russia in 1991
  along with communism and the command economy.

• This word return keeps cropping up in relation
  to Russia as we said it would in the introductory
  slide to the Weekly World Watch. It is part of
  the turning back of Russia. The word turning
  back literally means to turn around and go back
  to where you came from. This has in effect been
  happening since 1999. Russia as we know was a
  communist state / anti west etc until 1991. At
  this time mainly under Boris Yeltsin, Russia
  began reforming (called Glasnost) and becoming
  pro west. The Cold War was declared over. Under
  Putin, however, Russia is returning to anti west
  / Cold War ways. This is exactly what the Bible
  said would happen. They are the king of the

  down the main street of the Ukrainian capital

  the Reichstag in Berlin in 1945.
• For Mr Putin, a Yanukovich victory would be a big
  step towards realising plans to reconstitute a
  mini-Soviet Union by forming a common economic
  zone constituting Belarus, Russia, Ukraine and

• The scheme, a revival of a hated Soviet-era
  institution in which all housing blocks were
  watched by stooges who reported to the
  authorities, is being touted as an important
  measure for the prevention of terrorism.
• In Soviet times the feared local block councils
  combined the roles of moral guardians, tell-tales
  and spies. Under Stalin their word could mean
  death.
• With the end of the Soviet Union, the system
  collapsed. But a series of attacks by Chechen
  terrorists means that vigilance is again becoming
  a prized virtue among Russians.

• Hardly a week goes by without some reference in

  powers do not and will not possess".
• Such tub-thumping boasts may have been standard
  fare during the nuclear arms race of the 1960s
  and 1970s. This announcement, however, was part
  of an address by Vladimir Putin, the Russian

• Russia IS being turned back as God said they
  would. The Cold War situation continues to grow
  with the West in denial it is happening. Putin

  presidential palace. In scenes reminiscent of
  the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, more than
  200,000 anti-government demonstrators cheered on
  Viktor Yushchenko and called for his pro-Kremlin
  rival to accept electoral defeat. Many later
  broke away from the main protest in a sea of
  orange opposition flags to surround the
  presidential building in Kiev, the capital, where
  they were met by the police line.
• Comment
• The next slide looks at the implications of this
  but at its simplest level we see here the sea
  and waves roaring. We see people rising up
  against authority. We see, surely, scenes that
  Christ knew would be occurring just before he
  returned to the earth. It is of course political
  corruption that has bought this about. We see the
  spirit of the 3 frogs bringing the nations to the
  battle of Armageddon. (Rev 1613) The frogs
  represent a false cry of freedom (democracy). In

• For President Putin of Russia, victory for the
  thousands of pro-democracy demonstrators on the
  streets of Kiev would be fatal to his dream to
  rebuild a new empire on the Soviet Union's ashes.
  
• Just as anti-Russian crowds gathered in Budapest
  in 1956, Prague in 1968 and throughout eastern
  Europe in 1989, the Ukrainians today are also
  calling for an end to more than a decade of
  pro-Moscow authoritarian rule.
• During the Cold War, the Kremlin's response was
  to send tanks to crush aspirations for
  independence. These days the levers of influence
  are more likely to be political emissaries and
  oilmen wielding fat cheque-books.
• Moscow's coffers are bulging with oil and gas
  receipts and it has spent hundreds of millions of
  pounds trying to bring the former republics back
  under its sway.
• Mr Putin's immediate aim is to create a single
  economic zone in the region. Echoing Comecon, the
  Soviet-era trading bloc, the plan is to form a
  common market on the territories of Russia,
  Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine.
• The Kremlin's hope is that this will be a
  milestone on the road to raising Russia to the
  status of the controlling regional power and
  perhaps eventually regaining its superpower
  status.

Ukraine the consequences

• The Ukraine is a huge country. Larger even than
  France.
• The Ukraine is a divided country in terms of
  language, religion and politics.
• The most obvious geographical dividing line is
  the Dnieper river, which runs through the
  capital, Kiev. Historically, the land to the west
  has been known as Right Bank, the land to the
  east as Left Bank. Very crudely, Russian is the
  dominant language on most of the Left Bank, at
  least in the large urban centres, and Ukrainian
  on the Right. Orthodoxy is the dominant religion
  on the Left Bank, while on the Right it co-exists
  with the Uniate (or Greek Catholic) church, which
  combines Orthodox service rites with allegiance
  to the Pope.
• It is possible to see this country as the
  dividing line between the 2 legs of
  Nebuchadnezzars image. There is now a tug of war
  between Europe on the one side and Russia on the
  other both wanting the Ukraine to move closer to
  them.
• The US Secretary of State Colin Powell's forceful
  condemnation and his threat of "consequences"
  shows that Washington, after a cautious start,
  has decided to make the Ukraine elections an
  issue for the US as well.
• For Russia, and particularly for President Putin,
  on the other hand, Ukraine should be in its
  sphere of influence. Putin has warned Europe not
  to interfere.
• This is another event that is aggravating the
  Russian bear. It is being provoked. It is this
  type of provocation that will encourage Russia to
  head south in a huge invasion.

• Supporters of the Ukrainian opposition were
  celebrating on the streets of Kiev last night
  after the Supreme Court ruled the presidential
  election result invalid and ordered a new poll.
  The decision comes almost two weeks after
  allegations of widespread vote rigging drove tens
  of thousands of protesters on to the streets and
  sparked a stand-off between Russia and the West.
• Just hours before the decision, President
  Vladimir Putin showed his increasing anger at the
  situation by accusing America of pursuing a
  dictatorial foreign policy. He has seen the
  Ukraine, crucial to his plans to re-establish a
  Soviet-style bloc of loyal states, slip from his
  grasp.
• Comment
• Another election is to be held on the 26th
  December. This situation has not yet been
  resolved. Note the words in the above article.
  Putin is increasing in anger, accusing America
  of dictatorial foreign policy. We know a king of
  the north versus king of the south situation
  develops at the time of the end. This is one more
  event that is helping to bring this about. We
  should watch developments here.

• Russia rejected charges yesterday that it is
  refusing to co-operate with a United Nations
  inquiry into corruption in the Iraqi Oil for Food
  programme.
• The Russian deputy foreign minister, Yury
  Fedotov, dismissed a complaint by the head of the
  independent UN investigation, Paul Volcker, that
  Russian co-operation was not satisfactory.
• The inquiry is looking at the pre-war sanctions
  scheme from which Saddam Hussein illegally
  siphoned billions of pounds, while channelling
  millions more to domestic and foreign supporters.
  
• Comment
• More pressure on Russia. As well as the situation
  in the Ukraine, we now see Russia under pressure
  from the UN inquiry into corruption in the Iraqi
  Oil for Food programme. In Ezekiel 38 we are told
  that God will put hooks in Russias jaws to bring
  them down to Israel. There is a sense in this
  that Russia is compelled to do this. Or feels
  compelled. We are seeing perhaps the development
  of this compelling. As it is God who puts the
  hooks the jaws it is God who is bringing this
  about.

• Chechen rebels hit gas pipeline

• Event
• Chechen terrorists are suspected of blowing up a
  gas pipeline in the southern Russian republic of
  Dagestan yesterday, leaving 19 people injured.
• Two firemen were also injured as they fought the
  blaze, which closed down the main pipeline less
  than a mile outside Makhachkala, the regional
  capital.
• The explosion follows a number of similar attacks
  in the republic, where violence has spilt over
  from neighbouring Chechnya.
• Moscow has been fighting for more than a decade
  to contain the separatist rebellion in Chechnya
  and has succeeded in marginalising or winning
  over many of the armed factions in the republic.
• Comment
• More trouble of Russias borders. It is extremely
  probable that when Russia comes down it will come
  through the very area where this trouble is
  occurring. This area is very significant. It is
  the original area of Magog. We are seeing more
