  • Vanishing Cloze
  • Detectives

5
Dictogloss
  • A method of text reconstruction which can be used
as a way of presenting new factual information
    across the curriculum
  • Listen while I read a short passage
  • Write down as much as you can while I read again
  • In pairs try and make a shared version of what I
    read
  • Two pairs join and pool ideas
  • Compare your reconstructed text with the original
  • The aim for the group is to get as accurate a
copy of the original as possible so you should
    not use your own words

6
Benefits of Dictogloss for EAL learners
  • It can be used as a way of presenting new factual
    information across the curriculum
  • It encourages careful listening
  • It engages children in talk about language as
    well as content
  • It encourages children to work collaboratively
  • It provides the opportunity to practise orally
using the language modelled by the written text
  • It makes children notice language they do not
    understand
  • It encourages them to try out unknown or
    unfamiliar language
  • It facilitates the acquisition of new language
through the process of trying it out and
    collaboratively talking about meaning
  • The complexity of the text may be varied
according to the age and needs of the children

7
Vanishing Cloze
  • A text reconstruction activity
  • Write a short passage on the board
  • Pupils read it aloud together
  • Erase one word from anywhere in the text
  • Pupils read again, putting back the missing word
  • Erase another word and repeat the process
  • Continue until all the words are removed
  • Activity can be made more challenging by using
longer text and erasing phrases rather than
    individual words

Coffee   1.6 Billion cups of coffee are drunk
worldwide every day. Thats enough to fill nearly
three hundred Olympic-sized swimming pools every
day, and if you dont have a jar of coffee in
your kitchen, youre probably in a minority.
Coffee is a global industry and is the second
largest commodity-based product, only oil beats
it.
