Title: Childs Children
1Childs Children November 2004 Dear Parents, I
hope that you all survived Halloween. Throughout
the month of October, we had a great time in our
classroom. Here is a look at what will be
happening during the month of November. Reading
We will begin our 3rd theme, Lets Look Around.
During this theme we will explore the
interesting things that happen in the world
around us by reading about the changing seasons,
a trip to the ocean, and a surprise dinner. The
following concepts will be taught and reviewed
Blending words, the short a and i sounds, double
final consonants, word endings ( -s, -ed, -ing),
topic, main idea, details, complete sentences,
contractions, r-blends (er, or, ir). Sight
Words animal, bird, cold, fall, flower, full,
look, of, see, all, call, eat, every, first,
never paper, shall, why, also, blue, brown, clor,
funny, green, like, many, some. Please help your
child review these words this month. Spelling
Spelling words begin this week. Each Monday,
check for the new list of words. Please help
your child practice these words. If they pass
the pre-test on Monday, they will be given a
different list of challenge words. The test will
be Friday morning, and the corrected list will be
sent home on the following Monday. Math We will
continue our study of graphs, patterning and
sorting. We will begin a more in-depth study of
the concept of number. By now, your child
should be writing their numbers properly. We
will, however, review the correct formation as
well as recognition. Social Studies We will
be studying the members of the community around
us, as well as their roles. We will look at how
chores have changed throughout the years. We
will also study Native Americans and the history
of Thanksgiving. We will culminate this study
with a Thanksgiving Feast. Science We will look
at the various seasons, as well as continue our
Journeys. New Addition to Homework As part of
our school reading program, we are trying to read
1 million minutes. Please keep track how many
minutes your child reads at home, including their
homework book. This will now be included as
part of their Language Arts grade, for reading
homework. The minimum that your child should be
reading is 15 minutes per night. At the end of
the month, I will remind you to send back the
attached calendar listing the amount read for the
month. We will discuss this more in detail at
S.E.P. Conferences. As you can see, we will have
a busy month. If you have any questions, please
dont hesitate to call here at school or e-mail
me. I look forward to meeting with you at SEP
Conferences this month. Sincerely, Emily Child
