Title: EMAP Comparative Analysis

1
EMAP Comparative Analysis
  • Shared analysis of 3 data sets
  • Teresa Magee and Paul Ringold
  • EPA EMAP

2
Data Sets
  • FHM (using P3 veg)
  • Pacfish/Infish Biological Opinion Effectiveness
    Monitoring (PIBO)
  • EMAP enhanced plots
  • (Also.DEQ plots using EMAP protocols)

3
Initial Questions
  • Do data from the three methodologies produce
similar lists of plant species for each reach?
  • Does the species composition of a given reach
differ based on data collected using the
    different methods?

4
Do data from the three methods produce similar
values for metrics?
  • Species Richness and Evenness
  • Species Diversity
  • Ratio of invasives/natives Index of Alien
    InvasivenessEMAP procedure-develop invasiveness
    rank for each species

5
Considerations
  • Are there significant differences in any of these
    metrics between methodologies?
  • Evaluate the above variables for normality.
  • If differences exist, is this due to methodology
(and timing of sampling) or to differences in
    sampling scale?

6
Do data from the three methodologies produce
similar groupings of vegetation?
  • Assign the 23 study reaches to four vegetation
    series previously identified by EPA.
  • Use Indicator Species Analysis to identify
indicator species which typify each series for
each data set. Are these species substantively
the same for the data collected by all the
    methods?

7
Are relationships of vegetation groups to
environmental variables similar for all three
data sets?
  • Use NMS to generate ordination plots for each of
the three data sets. Are the distributions of
the 23 reaches similar on all three ordination
    diagrams?
  • Combine env/disturb/veg structure data from all
three sources into one data set (reaches x
    variables).
  • If there are differences in what is most
correlated for a given analysis, is this a
    function of plot size, location?

8
Are relationships of metrics describing
vegetation conditions to environmental,
disturbance, vegetation structure, vegetation
group, and diversity variables similar for the
three methodologies?
  • Use Spearman rank correlation to identify, the
    environmental, disturbance, vegetation structure,
vegetation group, and diversity variables that
are strongly related the condition metrics
