2Problem How do I support student science
process skills for the Science Fair?
One Solution Engage in a class science fair
project with teams of four students completing a
group project in five class periods.
Multiple science, math, and literacy curriculum
frameworks are addressed during the process.
3Three fifth grade classes completed the journey
- Today we will
- Organize our investigation teams.
- Learn how to use a digital scale and a
digital temperature probe/software. - Do two experiments.
- Make observations.
- Collect data.
4Before we startwe need to get organized.
Discuss with your team members, and choose
your task responsibility.
5Before we start the two experiments, we need to
practice two science technology skills
Measuring Mass with a Scale
Using a Computer to Collect Data
6Science starts with a question or problem.
Our Question is
What Can Happen During a Chemical Reaction?
- Follow the step-by-step procedures
- Make observations
- Collect temperature data for both chemical
reactions.
7Observation
8Technology to Collect Data
9Two Experiments
Exp. 1 Alka Seltzer Water
Exp. 2 Baking Soda Calcium
Chloride Water
10Being a Scientist
1) Choose either Exp 1 or Exp 2.
2) Develop a Question to study.
3) Question must be testable.
4) Make a hypothesis.
5) Design an exp. to test hypothesis.
11Hypothesis
12Experiment Collect Data
1) Testing Your Teams Hypothesis
2) Experiment Plan Organizer
3) Teamwork is IMPORTANT!!
4) Scientists - Careful work
5) Scientists Safety GOGGLES!!

- Finish Display Board
- Interview with teacher on your Project
23Prepare Display Board
24Finished Display Board

26Now that students have gained some experience
and practice at developing a science fair
project by collaborating with a group of their
classmates, each student will then create their
own project for this years school science fair.
