7Alcohol Drug Scenarios
8At the end of the spring session, you receive
notice that the RAs will conduct room checks to
be sure your room is in order and that no food
has been left in the refrigerator to sour over
the summer. RAs enter your room and find two
beers in the refrigerator. Both roommates may be
charged with an alcohol violation, if the
residents are not of legal drinking age. Youre
walking out of the Townhouses drinking a can of
beer, and youre not of legal drinking age. An
Area Coordinator (AC) happens to walk by at the
same time and observes you drinking the beer.
The AC asks for your ID and informs you that
he/she will be submitting an incident report.
9A student who is aware of the Honor Pledge he
signed smells marijuana coming from his neighbors
room. He contacts his RA, who contacts the Area
Coordinator (AC) for this residence hall. The AC
stands outside the room and smells a strong odor
that he believes to be marijuana. The AC
receives permission from the proper authorities
to conduct a search of the room and finds a
resident of the room and another student in the
room. A search of the room reveals a bag of
marijuana in the top drawer of the dresser under
some t-shirts, as well as drug paraphernalia that
looks like it was quickly shoved under the bed.
The AC and the RA document the incident and
inform the students that they will be processed
through the Student Life Judicial system. They
also inform the students that drug violations may
result in suspension. Youre a student athlete.
Your team is drug tested, and your test result is
positive. Your coach notifies the Department of
Student Life. Drug violations may result in
suspension.
10Disorderly Conduct, Hazing, and Harassment
Scenarios
11One evening, you and some friends get bored and
decide to make some prank phone calls to people
on campus. You disguise your voices and tell
those youre calling that you know what theyre
doing, similar to the type of dialogue thats
heard in scary movies. After each phone call,
you hang up and share a laugh with your friends.
Of course, you dont mean any harm. You and your
friends may be charged with harassment and/or
disorderly conduct.
12Assault, Vandalism, Safety Equipment Scenarios
13You and your buddies are hanging out one Saturday
evening after a big rain and decide to ride
around campus in your friends new pick-up truck.
You happen onto the intramural fields and cannot
resist the urge to go mud bogging. While making
rounds, campus police discover the damage to the
fields and notice your truck exiting the scene.
The campus police officers take pictures of the
damage and submit an incident report to Student
Life. You will be charged with vandalism, and
depending on the severity of the circumstances
and other factors involved, you may be
suspended. You and your friends think it would
be funny to set off one of the fire alarms in
your building, so you do. An RA catches you in
the act and informs the Area Coordinator. You
may be fined as much as 500 for this violation,
in addition to receiving other sanctions.
14Off-Campus Scenarios
15You are driving while intoxicated in Newberry
County when a police officer pulls you over. You
are arrested and charged with DUI. Our campus
police officers are made aware of the situation
and pass the information along to Student Life.
You may be sanctioned for this behavior, even
though it happened off campus and no matter what
the outcome of your court case may be. You are
at the McDonalds on Broad Street and are arrested
for disorderly conduct. The Clinton Police
contact campus police. You may be sanctioned for
this behavior, even though it happened off campus.
