Title: Strategy for Special Provision Consultation with CYP
1- Both here and mainstream have their good
moments. - Being with my mates makes me learn more.
It was difficult at my old school (mainstream).
I kept getting told off, it was my behaviour. I
kept hitting people I came to special school. I
am behaving. The teachers have talked to me to
help. I like it here.
Do you think that children with different sorts
of special need could go to the same school?
2- Children and young people with special needs want
teachers to - - Laugh - Listen
- - Smile - Not be moody
- Look at me - Know how to do a proper job
- Explain - Not be strict
- Be kind - Be patient
- Be funny - Make work fun
- Not shout - Spend time with us
- Be helpful
People who work in special schools know about
helping children with lots of needs. Should they
help those who work in other schools? How could
they do this?
3- Some changes children suggested
- Have electric doors
- Get rid of door frames
- At mainstream school the wheelchair access was
really bad and I was unhappy.
Some children need so much help they cant go to
school near home. What do you think about a local
school being changed to be able to provide this
help?
4Here it is easier for me, I learn better..I
dont want to go back to mainstream
It is unusual for me to be asked to be involved
in a project like this, because of my behaviour.
When I get bored I mess around Age 15
Some childrens behaviour is extremely difficult
and they can not go to their local school.
What sort of school should they go
to?
5I didnt have help in mainstream because there
are not enough staff
- In my special school we have a small classes 2
teachers, 2 assistants its a good thing,
because I get lots of help, more attention, more
care and lots of people to support me
If I went to a mainstream school I wouldnt cope
well. I also wouldnt make many friends. I like
the special needs school because I get all the
help that I need, they understand me and I have
made lots of friends here. Age 17
It takes me an hour to get to school each day. I
dont like being picked up from home I would
rather go to school on my own Age 15
Should children with a lot of needs go to a local
school and have extra help or travel to a
separate school?
6I dont think schools like this should close, as
they help people who find it difficult in
mainstream Age 15
My school makes me a good student and I have
lots of friends here. I wouldnt make any
changes. I have a chance to make decisions, I
would say my school is a good school to join.
They make food, drink and all sorts of things.
The dinner staff are nice to me Age 16
Now you have talked about special needs, do you
think things should stay the same or should they
change?
