13
  • Deeply held religious belief of any faith seems
to be damaging. The fundamentalist is too
committed to his faith to recognise that the
world is a beautiful place when youre willing to
share it with others without innate prejudice and
    hostility.

14
  • In the 21st century one way for us to get closer
to God is to abandon belief in God the almighty,
the creator, the worker in mysterious ways, the
judge and reward of all who truly love him. This
    God has become a danger

15
  • for hes become not the God of the martyr,
willing to die or suffer for faith but the God
of the killer, willing to make others die or
suffer as an act of faith and of the
narrow-minded who claim that their love for God
must be expressed as hostility to anyone whose
views, lifestyle or sexuality is different to
    their own.

16
  • We live with a world-view thats been shaped by
two great intellectual and spiritual sources
  • the development of Christianity
  • and the knowledge derived by science and reason.

17
  • Our culture is essentially humane and
    inquisitive.
  • Its aim is to open doors rather than build
    walls.

18
  • At the beginning of the 21st century we need to
define and offer an appropriate spirituality for
    a post-religious society

19
  • There will always be a place for those who seek
the affirmation of certainty in the beliefs,
understanding and practices of the past so
fundamentalism will not die but there is a risk
that it will kill any chance of developing an
appropriate good news for this century.

20
  • We do not live in a post-Christian society but a
society where the old affirmations of religion in
such ideas as God in control of history, the
possibility of physical miracles, heaven and hell
or the bible as literal truth are inconsistent
with how life is now experienced.

21
  • Love God and your neighbour as yourself
  • Treat others the way you want to be treated

22
  • The essential teaching of Jesus is the benchmark
that most people still hold as the basis of
personal morality but there is no place for a
    theology based on pre-scientific thought.

23
  • If we are to offer a spirituality for the 21st
century then we must look to the future rather
than the past and have the courage to allow those
who cannot to go their own way.
