Title: ICT in Science GCSE

1
ICT in Science GCSE
  • Edexcel Workshop
  • Phil Godding

2
Course programme
3
Using ICT in Science
  • ICT can be used for
  • simulations modelling
  • data capture
  • databases spreadsheets
  • publishing presentation
  • information resources
  • Translates to in skills
  • CD-ROMs
  • Datalogging
  • Databases
  • Digital Capture
  • Presentational software
  • Spreadsheets
  • Word-processing/Desk Top Publishing
  • World Wide Web\Internet

4
Internet
  • Structured
  • Planned
  • Pre-cached pages? Or live?
  • Differentiated for skills of users
  • Differentiated for ability
  • Individual and/or fun-time

5
Web sites
  • Too many to list!
  • Where do you start? What do you want?
  • ICT help and teaching support?
  • Teacher resource sites/downloads
  • Pupil reference sites
  • But try BECTA and ASE for links and support

6
Simulations modelling
  • too large, too small, too fast, too slow?
  • Visualising the theory
  • What if..?
  • Interactive and investigative
  • Own or bought in?
  • Best sellers?
  • Examples..

7
Digital capture
  • Capture of any graphical image by use of a
    peripheral device
  • Examples of digital capture include
  • scanning of images
  • digital cameras
  • video cameras
  • digital microscopes
  • icams, flexcams

8
Digital Microscopes
9
What can I do?
  • Stills image Capture
  • Video sequence recordings
  • Programmable interval shots
  • Length and area measuring function
  • Sound recording (assumes a microphone and a
soundcard with a microphone input jack) Image
    comparison
  • Image amalgamation, manipulation etc

10
(No Transcript)
11
As a teaching tool .
  • whole class viewing of slides e.g. How to
    recognise.
  • whole class teaching of technique e.g How to use
    a heamocytometer ..
  • database development of slides etc
  • measurements (length area) of materials
  • image manipulation e.g. cut paste to.
  • video action sequences with storage and re-play
    facilities

12
Flexcams icams
13
Flexcams icams 1
  • initially analogue signal for TV and/or PC
    projector only
  • now USB adaptor to enable signal to be digitised
    for PC capture
  • usual facilities for image manipulation

14
Flexcams icams 2
  • Video microscopy
  • Display of live specimens - insects
  • Document displays
  • Magnifying small objects rocks
  • Dissections/intricate operations
  • Show text
  • Show diagrams
  • Demonstrations
  • Record experiments
  • Aid discussion groups
  • Use with videoconferencing computer image
    systems

15
Spreadsheets
  • What can they do for science teaching admin?
  • Calculations and data analysis
  • Graphing
  • Models and what if
  • School/pupil admin
  • Stock lists
  • Priority/wish lists
  • Science budget
  • Petty cash
  • Examples.

16
Spreadsheets -
  • Practical workshop

17
Lunch
18
Datalogging
19
Common UK dataloggers
20
Datalogging
  • Why datalogging?
  • Practical work
  • Remote logging
  • Classroom management
  • What do I do next?

21
Why datalogging ?
  • fast data capture allows us to see (some)
    invisible data
  • large no. of data points - can alter our view of
    results
  • control of sample interval, no of samples,
    duration
  • presentation as graphs, tables,
  • data analysis - in software (spreadsheet) or by
    export
  • automation function and time saving
  • long term (days/weeks) or very fast data capture
  • linked to computer or remotely
  • introduces students to idea of digital technology

22
If starting off.. keep it simple..
  • Exothermic reactions
  • Endothermic reactions
  • Heat conduction in metals
  • Insulation theme plenty of ideas here
  • Diurnal rhythms
  • all in QCA document and all use temperature
    probes

23
Practical datalogging
24
Remote Logging(ideas to dispel the myth that
remote logging is just for ecologists)
  • No computers or not enough computers in the
    science lab?
  • Access to networks limited, network across
    school?
  • Want the whole class to work on the same data?
  • Acids, 240Volts, excited Yr 8s Health
    Safety?
  • and if else failsback to field trips!

25
Classroom management
  • Limited dataloggers, sensors and/or PCs in lab?
  • use loggers remotely and then download when
    access to PC room
  • use single logger (remotely) and then pass round
    logger
  • use single logger and then network data
  • one PC and one logger two workstations
  • the circus approach
  • whole class demo via TV/ projector
  • demo - with pupils doing it traditionally
  • demo but use s/sheet for their data
  • network software

26
Other ideas
  • Try using spreadsheet capabilities
  • Try using graphing facilities
  • Whole class/sharing of data opportunities
  • Perfect and substitute data/graphs as exemplars
  • Data tables and graphs to w-p

27
ICT audits and back to base ..
28
What do I do when I get back?
ICT audit - what have we got?
  • general software e.g Excel, PowerPoint
  • science software
  • digital capture/imaging
  • dataloggers, leads, sensors software,
  • latest software? Compatibility issues
  • PCs, serial ports, USB,
  • networks

29
What do I do when I get back?
  • 2. Consolidation of skills
  • Make up sets of equipment and ensure they all
    work e.g datalogging, digital micros
  • Software issues
  • Can I set it up? Problem solve,
  • Which experiments do teachers want to
develop/use? Or what do they teach?
  • Can I do the activity?
