Humble Beginnings
  • Careers in the late 1960s
  • Tradition and stereotyped
  • Awakenings in the 1980s
  • Early days, Waste Minimisation being recognised
    by forward thinking companies
  • Environmental Protection Act of 1990
  • Looking back now, it really made a difference
    turning point
  • Lull in the mid 1990s
  • Budding Environmentalists disillusioned
  • Resurgence 2000 onwards
  • Environment takes off, driven by need and desire
  • 2007 was seen as a good year for the

IEMA Institute of Choice
  • Launched by Michael Meacher in September 1999
  • Merger of IEM and IEA
  • 4,000 members then
  • Over 13,000 members at the end of May 2008
  • Still growing / just scratching the surface

Broad Church
  • Regardless of sector, all Environmental
    Practitioners must
  • Juggle the environmental needs of their company
    (plate spinning)
  • Wrestle with existing UK environmental
    legislation, e.g. Producer Responsibility and
    WEEE whilst also considering applicable EU
    regulations
  • Be aware of future environmental legislation,
    well in advance and alerting the decision makers
    around them on what must be done
  • Cajole colleagues of the importance of their work
    get them to see the green light
  • Champion the cause!

  • Recognition of the growing importance of the
    environmental practitioner
  • By Government, stakeholders and public alike
  • Not just an add on to Health and Safety
  • Very much a stand alone profession in its own
    right
  • Full career path now available, sitting in line
    with other recognised professions, e.g.
    engineering, accountancy etc
  • All companies must have a robust Environmental
    Management System (EMS) cascading through the
    companys line management and driven from the
    top, assisted by their environmental person
  • EMAS, ISO 14001 and our Acorns stepped approach
  • We have come a long way in 40 years!
