3Firework Statistics
- In 2005, 10,800 people were injured in fireworks
related accidents. Nearly half of those injured
were under 15. - Sparklers cause 21 of all fireworks injuries
reported, and account for half of the firework
injuries to children under 5. - Homemade fireworks cause 33 of injuries
- Bottle Rockets can reach speeds of 200 miles per
hour and account for 17 of all injuries.

4Gas Grill Statistics
- More than 134 million people will celebrate the
4th this year by using a grill - Each year there are 6,500 grill fires
- Almost 1/5 of all gas grill fires happen in July
- Every year 600 explosions are caused by
overfilled propane tanks

5Child Predators
- There are 11,990 registered sex offenders living
in Georgia - Child molesters love water. They love bumping
into kids in the wave pool and using goggles to
watch kids underwater. They loiter around the
changing areas and bathrooms, taking pictures of
videotaping children without permission.
Returning day after day to play with unsuspecting
toddlers in the kiddie pool. -Praesidium, Inc.,
corporate training company specializing in
abuse risk management

6What to Do?
- Identify places where someone could watch without
being noticed - Watch for strangers alone in the water who seem
uncomfortably close to children - Designate an adult to watch the water

7Houseboat Exhaust Routing System
- Exhaust is routed adjacent to the swim platform,
releasing carbon monoxide and endangering anyone
sitting on the platform or swimming nearby.

8What to Do?
- Install carbon monoxide detectors
- Make first aid available
- Be aware of nearby houseboats

9Jet Skis
- In 2003, 200 youth under the age of 14 were
injured in Jet Ski accidents and 10 were killed. - Injuries sustained in Jet Ski accidents were
shown to be more severe than injuries sustained
in small boating accidents more required
surgery and extended hospital stay. -University
of Florida, Dept of Surgery - Jet Skis are the only recreational boats for
which the leading cause of death is blunt trauma
rather than drowning. -American Academy of
Pediatrics

10What to Do?
- No one under 16 allowed to operate

11Life Vests (personal floatation device)
- Tragically, many child drown every year while
wearing a life vest orpersonal floatation device - This happens because not all life vests are
designed to keep a childshead out of the water.
Infants and toddlers tip forward in the water,
andare unable to right themselves. - What to do Only Coast Guard rate type 1 life
jackets are designed to keep an unconscious
swimmer face up in the water. For this
reason Type 1 vests are the most desirable. - Only buy Coast Guard rated vests
- Read all instructions included with your childs
PFD test it forproper fit.

12Legal Fireworks
- Sparklers Sparklers burn at 1,200 degrees
Fahrenheit. This is the same temperature used
by ranchers to brand cattle. - Sparklers cause ½ of all fireworks injuries to
children under the age of 5. - What to do? Dont allow young children to play
with sparklers. They dont understand that the
sparkler is 1,200 degrees. Children often drop
the sparklers or hold them too close to other
children or themselves causing serious burns.

13Legal Fireworks (continued)
- Bottle Rockets (and other airborne fireworks).
Bottle Rockets can be dangerous for two reasons - They are susceptible to ricochet and can end up
traveling in any direction but the one intended. - Rockets presents a significant fire hazard. When
a bottle rocket detonates, the casing burns for a
few minutes. Only a few seconds are needed to
start a fire. - What to do?
- Avoid using recreational rocket fireworks. If
you decide to use them, make sure children are
shielded from any malfunction or change of
direction

14Illegal Fireworks
- Be aware of the fireworks on the federally
banned list and dont buy or use them - Ashcans, Silver Salutes, Cherry Bombs,
Quartersticks, Quarterpounders, M-80s, M-100s,
M-1000s - What to do?
- Buy fireworks from vendors who operate openly
and welcome visits by fire departments and
police officers. Dont buy fireworks from
people who approach you, people who are
operating on the street, or from the internet. - NOTE while these fireworks are banned, other
less potent versions are not (like the M-60).
Avoid these as well. Abuse of these fireworks
(like shooting two at the same time) have the
same devastating affect as the real thing and
cause 33 of all fireworks related injuries.

15 Grill Safety
- Gas leaks, blocked tubes and overfilled propane
tankscause most grill fires and explosions. - What to do Never use a gas cylinder if it
shows any form of visual damage. - After a period of storage or disuse (such as over
the winter), the gas grill should be checked for
gas leaks, deterioration, proper assembly and
burner obstructions before using. - Never force a gas tank connection if it doesnt
connect easily, the connection may be the wrong
size.

16Overfill Protectors
- Overfilled gas tanks can explode violently when
exposed to moderate heat. - All cylinders manufactured before 2002 are
potentially dangerous. - Today, all cylinders must have overfill
protection devices (OPDs). - A float valve closes when the propane level
reaches 80. OPDs also stop gas flow when the
cylinder is not connected.

17Gas Tank Knob
Old cylinders that have not been fitted with
overfill protection devises will have 5 prong
knobs and should not be used.
Cylinders with new overfillprotection valves
will havea 3 prong, tamper proofhand wheel
- Never ask your propane filler to fill the tank
past the valve shut off
