The Tiers of Intervention at Birch Street
Elementary
  • TIER I 100 of our children receive instruction
in the general education classroom using our core
    program, Open Court.
  • In addition to whole-group instruction, during
the two-hour uninterrupted block, the teacher
pulls small groups to work on specific skills, to
pre-teach, or re-teach, while other students work
    independently or in cooperative groups.

3
TIER II
  • Our TIER II intervention is delivered during a
thirty minute block of each day.
  • Each grade level has chosen a common intervention
    time.
  • During that common time our Para-pros, and the
Title I Reading Teacher, are only available to
    that grade level.
  • First Grade has also incorporated the services of
the speech and language teacher and the special
education teacher into our TIER II time.

4
TIER II
  • Students are selected for Tier II intervention
based on a variety of assessments including
  • DIBELS
  • Core reading program assessments
  • Teacher and support personnel observations

Professional Learning Community
  • The first grade teachers and RF coach discuss
students progress during grade level meetings.
  • Assessment data is analyzed.
  • New expectations are set for each group and the
    regrouping is done.
  • A new prescription is written for children
    whose placements have changed.

11
The Prescription
  • After determining what skill deficiencies the
child has, a intervention prescription is
written for him/her to be implemented for four to
    six weeks.
  • At the end of the prescribed time, we evaluate
student progress and make instructional decisions
based on teacher observations and new assessment
    data.
  • We reserve the right to be wrong, and may adjust
a students placement before the 4-6 week
    intervention period is finished.

12
Tracking the Intervention
  • After placing students in their prescribed
intervention, we keep track of their academic
history by using a Classroom Intervention Record
    Sheet.
  • Any student receiving Tier II intervention has an
individual Intervention Record that is part of
    their CA-60.

Our Data Board
  • We chart our students progress throughout the
year based on DIBELS results and move student
markers on the graphs as they progress toward
    benchmark!
  • This is a place where we can celebrate across the
grade levels and cheer each other on.
  • It is a great focal point, focusing our attention
and discussion on student data and achievement.

Just Try It!
  • It may seem like a lot of work, and some believe
our kids are too young, but it can be done. We
    did it with first graders.
  • Second and third grade started the year with
different intervention plans, then saw our
results and asked us what we were doing and
    changed!
  • Your kids will love to switch and the benefits
    are enormous!
