Title: Internet Identity Theft

1
Internet Identity Theft
  • You could be the next victim of Cybercrime

2
My name is Naedine Adderley.
  • I am a Freshman
  • My major is Business Management
  • I enjoy writing and plan to become a prolific
    writer in the near future.
  • I have three grown children and enjoy my freedom.
  • Introduction to computers has been a life saver
    to me.

3
How identity theft happens
  • They steal your purse/wallet containing your ID,
    credit bank information
  • They steal your mail
  • They scam you often through email
  • They use personal info you share on the internet
  • They get your information from the workplace
which is (business record theft) by hacking in
    electronic files

4
No need for an identity theft to set foot in your
house
  • Financial records
  • Tax returns
  • Birth dates and bank account numbers may be
stored in your computer. This is a goldmine to
    the thief.

5
Tips to keep your computer safe.
  • Update your virus protection software regularly
or when a new virus is announced
  • Be alert for security repairs that you can
    download from your operating system
  • Do not download files from strangers
  • Use a firewall program-especially if you use a
high-speed internet like cable or DSL
  • Use a secure browser- software that encrypts or
scrambles info you send over the internet
  • Before you dispose of a computer delete personal
    information.

6
The Largest Break - In
  • February 2003 computer intruders accessed more
than 10 million credit card account numbers.
  • Info accessed from computer system of a
    third-party payment company.
  • A computer science student from Univ. of Texas
hacks database and swipes Social Security numbers
of 55,000 students, faculty, and former employees.

7
The Real Damage
  • The most significant damage felt by victims of
identity theft is not monetary-it is emotional.
  • Victims say they not only face the reality that
their financial privacy has been compromised by
thieves, but have to endure lengthy, painstaking
struggles to clean up their credit records
    tarnished by thieves.

8
What you can do
  • Dont store passwords on your computers hard
    disk.
  • Passwords should be hard to figure out.
  • Dont use your mothers maiden name or
    birthdates.
  • Never use the last four digits of social security
    numbers.
  • If you suspect bills are late call your creditor.
  • Never give out personal information on
    cellular/cordless
