NPS Water Resource InventoriesLevel 1 Water
Quality Inventories
  • From the NPS-75 - Natural Resources Inventory
    and Monitoring Guideline (Appendix A, p. 28,
    July 1992)
  • Water Quality Data for Key Park Waterbodies
    (IM Theme 8)
  • Key water bodies are defined as those waters that
are essential to the central cultural,
    historical, or natural resources management
themes of the park or provide habitats to
threatened or endangered plants and animals
  • Purpose of Water Quality Inventory Ensure that
all parks have a nominal water quality dataset.

Water Quality Data for Key Park Waterbodies
(IM Theme 8)
  • Two Phase Approach
  • Data Mining Baseline Water Quality Data
Inventory and Analysis (Horizon) Reports at
    parks and at URL below
  • Targeted Field Inventory Level I Water Quality

NPS Water Resources Inventories
From the NPS-75 - Natural Resources Inventory
and Monitoring Guideline (Appendix A, p. 28,
July 1992)
  8. Water chemistry of key water bodies, based
on size, uniqueness, representativeness, threats,
etc., including   Alkalinity pH Conductivity Diss
olved Oxygen Rapid bioassessment baseline
(EPA/state protocols, involving fish and
macroinvertebrates) Temperature Flow Other
constituents where important as determined on a
case-by-case basis, including Toxic
elements Clarity/turbidity
Nitrate/nitrogen Phosphate/Phosphorus Chlorophyll
Sulfates Bacteria
Generally 4 samples over a hydrologic season

Level 1 Water Quality Inventories1998-2002
  • Based on the Baseline Water Quality Data
Inventory and Analysis Reports completed to date,
targeted parks were invited through the SCC to
submit study plans to collect Level I water
quality data. Targeted parks were selected based
on the number of water quality observations
collected in the park and in the study area, the
number of missing/old water quality parameters in
the study area, whether the park participated in
identifying and uploading water quality data to
    STORET.

Level 1 Inventories1998-2002
  • 80 Parks Invited to submit inventory plans
  • Initiated/completed inventories in 50 parks
  • Alaska Working on sampling stratification
    applicable
  • to most Alaska networks
  • Parks were given the option of performing the
inventory themselves or with a contractor or
    cooperator of their choice.
  • If the parks did not have the resources to
initiate the inventory WRD would arrange for the
    USGS to conduct it.
  • Some parks did not have the time or people to
commit to the inventory in any form.

8
Completing the Water Quality Inventory 2004-2008
  • 105 120 additional parks may require inventory
  • Propose to complete through networks
  • Final Resolution of Alaska

    goals, and objectives.
  • A brief interpretive section that compares
results to applicable water quality criteria.
  • A map depicting the sites inventoried.
  • Tables depicting the results of the laboratory
and field analyses and georeferenced site
    locations.
