Title: Technological Trash and What You Can Do

1
Technological TrashandWhat You Can Do
  • By Chandler Allen

2
What It Does to Our Planet
  • Throwing computers, batteries, etc away destroys
the environment a lot more than cans or plastic.
This is because of the chemicals and hazardous
components inside them. When new things hit the
market, people dispose of the old and get the
new. This creates waste but if we recycle, then
companies can reuse these instead of making more
than needed. This in return keeps less hazardous
    materials from being in landfills.

3
A Greener Apple
  • Apple has been criticized because of the
chemicals in its products. Apples response to
this was that it would reduce chemicals in new
products and try and follow the example of London
and other places. Some chemicals they are trying
to use less of are lead, cadium, hexavalent,
    chronium, decabromodiphenyl, ether, arsenic,
    mercury, polyvinyl chloride, brominated flame,
    and retardants.

4
Recycle Game Consoles??
  • If you go to GameStop, EB Games, or Circuit City,
you can trade in your old working game consoles.
You wont get exactly what you paid for it
youll most like get half of the standing price
or a bit more. This is a great way to help the
environment because it prevents all those
chemicals from going into the ground. If your
gaming console is broken then you can still get
it recycled, but you cant get money for it.

5
Mobile Phones and The Environment
  • Cell phones may seem small, but they have
seriously harmful chemicals. Some of these are
mercury, lead, nickel, and cadium. About 312,000
lbs gets thrown away a year.

6
Staples Accepts E-Waste
  • Staples is working with Amadi to recycle e-waste.
Staples is making sure they abide by all laws and
regulations set by the EPA (Environmental
Protection Agency). Staples charges 10 per large
item smaller items such as keyboards are free.
Its not always easy being green. However,
through the leadership of Staples, Americans will
see that preventing pollution by recycling
unwanted electronics is as easy as it gets, said
Stephen L. Johnson, Administrator of the U.S.
    EPA.
  • Amadi is an e-waste recycling company.

7
Televisions
  • The FCC is eventually going to make it where we
all run our TVs off a digital signal. That means
all the TVs before LCD, like CRT, will be put in
landfills. CRTs have about 8 lbs. of lead in them
each. This is critical because there are so many
CRTs and lead is so dangerous.

8
Waste Less
  • Did you know that if you have your cell phone
charger plugged in without the cell phone adapted
to it, you still use power? So, next time unplug
the charger, not just your cell phone.

9
Less Paper Wasted
  • Why do you print your photos on paper from your
printer? Why not share them through email, jump
    drives, or camera cards?

10
Old E-Junk
  • If you have and old printer or a old PDA dont
throw it away, take it to a e-waste center. If
you do this youre saving the earth by not
poisoning the earth or the water.

11
BatteRycycle
  • All your cameras, RCs, etc, use a lot of
batteries. Almost all your small electronics run
on batteries. That creates a lot of used dead
batteries, which creates a lot of e-waste. Finish
the life cycle of the battery and recycle it so
    it can live again.

12
In With the New, Out With the Old?
  • When your T.V. breaks, you normally throw it away
and get that new LCD you wanted. Why not recycle
that T.V. and help keep the earth a better place
    to live?

13
CO2Saver
  • CO2Saver is a downloadable program which stops
CO2 being used when your computer is idle. This
saves several thousands of pounds of CO2
emissions from going into the air.

14
E-waste Art?
  • Allison Schutt takes discarded computer boards
    and makes lamps and chandeliers.
  • Susannah Dwyer use the keyboards and other things
    to make jewelry.

15
Wet Ballasts
  • Wet ballasts contain PCBs, which is a bunch of
individual chemicals mixed. This is so very
potent to the earth that the USA banned them in
the 1970s. The reason this is mentioned is
because some are still out there, because the
fluorescent light bulbs last 10-30 yrs. So if you
find one, report it to the state.

16
Green Fed
  • Green Fed , created by Arkansas Department of
Environmental Quality, is a program where
students can send e-waste free of charge. Green
Fed has already recycled 1000 tons of e-waste.
So if your school has a bunch of e-waste, tell
them to send it Green Fed .

17
Dont Throw it Away
  • The next time your batteries die or T.V. quits,
dont throw them away. Recycle them in their
    proper recycling areas instead.

18
Thanks 4 Viewing My Slide
  • Remember, recycle e-waste and keep the chemicals
out of the soil and our water.
