Why This Partnership
  • Health services form part of the Core Offer
  • Childrens Centre is committed to multi agency
    working
  • Other partners include the police and the
    voluntary sector
  • Childrens Centre is located in area of high
social deprivation eg local ward is one of the
top 5 for violent crime and estate serving the
childrens centre is a domestic violence
    hotspot
  • Health statistics reveal local area have the
highest serious mental illness rate and highest
HIV rate in the country along with a large
    transient population
  • We define health in it widest sense

4
Challenges
  • Sustainability money
  • Workforce remodelling terms and conditions
  • Different work cultures between agencies
  • Maintaining focus on Leadership and SDP day to
    day matters,Ofsted, SATs etc
  • Commissioning services eg PCT, Social Services,
    Job Centre

5
How It Was Established
  • Original contact was with a PCT service manager
who was committed to outreach work
  • Relationship was established between school and
    local health centre
  • Individual champions vital for success
  • NCSL Multi Agency pilot project formalised
contact and led to the development of LOMAT
    (Loughborough Multi-Agency Team)
  • Partnership now up and running

6
Where We Are in the Journey
  • We have an annual Health Fayre supported by GPs
and nurses from the Health Centre
  • This a health promotion event
  • We are planning a lifestyle clinic
  • Both the Childrens Centre and Health Centre
    signpost each others services
  • The Childrens Centre also offers Speech Therapy
Drop- in Clinic, a Health Visitor Clinic and a
    Smoking Cessation Group

One Key Challenge Along the Way
  • Resources are our key challenge
  • Both partners are keen and willing to engage but
finding person power has proved difficult
  • This has meant for example that the Lifestyle
Clinic has not yet started as one nurse is off
sick and the other consequently snowed under
  • Another example Health Visitor Clinic is now
running from the Childrens Centre instead of
rather than as well as the Health Centre

9
One Key Success
  • Genuine multi agency working across LOMAT with
more in common than we maybe realised
  • This has led to more families accessing services
    and support
  • LOMAT has a real presence and investment in the
Childrens Centre which makes the Core Offer
meaningful and the Childrens Centre goes beyond
just being an extension to the Primary School

10
One Key Learning So Far
  • That enthusiasm, individual champions and
personal relationships only go so far
  • Large organisations such as the PCT and Social
Care can be difficult to work with as they have
engrained cultural and professional patterns of
    working
  • Whilst we may share common goals each
organisation has their own service priorities
    limited often by financial constraints

11
Whats in it for Us
  • Develops our passion and commitment to improving
the lives of the communities we serve
  • We believe that this is far more effective when
    we work together
  • Working together on issues vital to families such
as child protection, health promotion, family
support and preventing crime and anti social
    behaviour
  • Sharing expertise and practice across disciplines
  • A fulfilling and enjoyable way of working!
