2I. History (before WWII)
- a. Jewish people claim Palestine as HOLY LAND
- - 3000 years ago Jewish kings ruled the land
- b. Palestinian people claim Palestine as HOLY
LAND - - The land belonged to them when Jews were
forced out in 135 AD. - c. In 1800s, the Jewish people started returning
to their homeland. - -ZIONIST MOVEMENT Jewish immigrants returned
to Palestine. - - Non-Jewish Palestinians did not like thousands
of immigrants coming into their homeland.
3II. WORLD WAR II ISRAEL
- In Germany, millions of Jews were killed by Nazis
and Hitler. - -Thousands of Jews moved to Palestine
- b. After WWII, the UN wanted to divide Palestine
into 2 states - 1. A Palestinian state for Palestinians
- 2. A Jewish state, called ISRAEL for Jews
- - the USA supported this plan!
- - City of Jerusalem would not be a part of a
state, it would be shared!

- c. Jews were happythey got approx. 55 of the
land of the original Palestine. - d. Palestinians were unhappy. The neighboring
countries were also unhappy. - e. There was blood shed in 1948-49.

- Independence and Bloodshed
- Jews Zionists claimed that Israel was an
independent state and triggered an invasion by
Egypt, Syria,, Lebanon and Iraq. - 400,000 Palestinian Arabs fled Israel during the
fighting and were in camps near the border. - The conflict was not resolved.
6Terrorism strikes the Olympics!
- In September 1972, a Palestinian militant faction
known as Black September killed 11 Israeli
athletes at the Olympic Games in Munich, Germany.

7- PLO Palestinian Liberation Organization
- Yasir Arafat Started a Palestinian army in
Israel (1960s-1980s) - 1988 - Infitada boycotts, protests, throwing
rocks at Israeli Jews both civilians and
soldiers.
8III. Peace Treaties
- In 1978, US President Jimmy Carter asked
Israeli/Palestinian leaders for a peace summit - Camp David Accords 1st peace treaty in 30
years! - 3 areas were set aside for Palestinians to have
SOME self-control. - - Gaza Strip - West Bank - Golan Heights
- d. Israelis and Palestinians still did not like
living together. (remember INTIFADA 88)

9CURRENT CONFLICT
- In 1993 and 1995 Israel granted limited
SELF-RULE to parts of the Gaza Strip and West
Bank. - 2001 Israelis elect Ariel Sharon as Prime
Minister (military man!) - 2002 - The U.S., E.U., U.N. and Russia submitted
a three-phase plan calling for a Palestinian
state and conclusive peace accord by 2005. But
Israeli and Palestinian officials failed to reach
any major agreements.

- 2003 2nd Infitada - suicide bombings in major
cities by Palestinians. - - President Bush pushes for road map to
