Location

• Southeast part of England
• Close to London- roughly 50 miles away
• Proximity to the sea made it Englands first
  seaside resort in the
• mid 18th century

Why people go there

• Royal Pavilion (principal attraction today)
• Brighton Pier
• Other neat attractions (In the next slides)

The Lanes

• A popular place for shopping
• It is a maze of lanes that were the original
  streets of the village of Brighthelmstone
• Many antiques and other shops

Old Ship Hotel

• Built in 1559
• Later it was bought by Nicholas Tettersells
• He helped Charles II during the Civil War
• Charles II gave him the money in return for
  taking him to France
• It is still here today

Brighton Dome

• Indian style building
• Was once King George IVs stables
• Now it is a major art venue

Sea Life Centre

• Built in 1872 as a menagerie (zoo)
• Aquarium in 1929
• Has exotic marine life, mainly from the English
  Channel

Brighton Pier

• Built in 1899
• Victorian Pier
• Includes amusements and arcades
• We will hopefully go here on our trip

History of the Royal Pavilion

• 23 year old Prince of Wales (King George IV)
  secretly married Maria Fitzherbert- 29 year old
  Catholic widow.
• They moved to a farmhouse near the shore
• John Nash changed the house into an oriental
  palace
• Completed in 1823
• Sold by Queen Victoria to Brighton in 1850

Royal Pavilion Attractions

• It has a banqueting table that seats 24
• Domes are said to be Hindu style
• Queen Victories bedroom
• Music room could hold a 70 piece orchestra
• Mrs. Fitzherbert had to move nearby when the
  prince officially got married.
• We will most likely go here in Brighton
