Emperor Hailé Selassié I was born as Lij Tafari
Makonnen on 23 July 1892. Each stamp depicts a
portrait of the Emperor in military dress.

11 September 1952 Federation of Ethiopia and
Eritrea
Historically speaking, the peace treaty signed
with Italy on 10 February 1947 stipulated that
Eritrea was a part of Ethiopia. As a result of a
referendum between the two, an official pack was
concluded. This gave Ethiopia and important
access to the Red Sea which was commercially
very beneficial to Ethiopia.
Correct 65 cent air mail rate to England. 1 May
1953 Addis Ababa cancel.

25 May 1953 15 Cent Addition to the 1947
Definitives
Stamp depicts the Parliament building in Addis
Ababa. The 15 cent stamp was added to accommodate
rate changes.
40 cents total franking (10 cents on back) pays
the correct internal rate of 15 cents 25 cents
for registration. During this time, the internal
rate appears to be based on distance and varied
from 10 50 cents. This covers bears a ?? 1964
Abra Minch cancel and a 16 April 1964 Addis Ababa
receiving cancel.

Stamps depict Emperor Hailé Selassié in military
dress overlooking Massawa harbor or in admiral
dress aboard a ship.
25 cents pays correct surface mail rate to the
US. 18 February 1954 Addis Ababa cancel.

24 August 1954 Reissue of the 1947 Express
Delivery Stamp
The stamp was reprinted and reissued. The 1954
stamp was watermarked. In actual practice, very
few of these stamps were used for express
delivery service.
The 1.15 rate pays the registered air mail one
extra weight unit, rate to the US. 3 May 1960

Stamp was added to reflect changes in rates.
All three stamps in this series depict Princess
Tsahai in attendance of a patient.
15 cents pays the 10 cent 5 cent for additional
10 grams of printed matter / open flap business

5 November 1955 Silver Jubilee Fair Issue
An international Silver Jubilee Fair was
organized to coincide with the Coronation
anniversary. This cultural and economic fair
illustrated the Ethiopias progress in many area
of endeavor. All values depict Emperor Hailé
Selassié and the emblem of the Silver Jubilee
Fair.
Only 500 Souvenir Folders were prepared for the
first day of issue ceremonies.

30 December 1955 10th Anniversary of Ethiopian
Airlines Air Mail Issue
This issues commemorates the recreation of the
Ethiopian National Airlines after the war. All
stamps depict a Convair jet flying over typical
Ethiopian mountain scenery.
Philatelically prepared first day of issue post
card showing the Ethiopian Airlines Convair jet
and bearing the three stamps cancelled with the
Philatelic Dept. A.A. cancel dated 30 December
1955.

16 July 1956 25th Anniversary of the
Constitution Air Mail Issue
The first Constitution of Ethiopia was
promulgated in 1931 by Emperor Hailé Selassié.
This issue commemorates the 25th anniversary of
the original Constitution and new Silver Jubilee
Constitution that would go in effect on 4
November 1955. All stamps depict the Emperor and
other dignitaries celebrating the Constitutions
anniversary.
At 90 cents, this registered (35 cents), air
mail (50 cents) may be over franked by 5 cents.
24 July 1956 Registered 1 A.A. cancel. 28 July
1956 Ravenna, Italy receiving cancel. Contains
chain letter urging recipient to send along
stamps to the other six addressees listed on
letter. Letter presumably contained a selection
of Ethiopian postage stamps.

7 February 1957 Ancient Capitals of Ethiopia Air
Mail Issue
This set was to commemorate the famous historic
capitals of Ethiopia.

14 February 1957 70th Anniversary of Addis Ababa
Air Mail Issue
This issue commemorates the founding of Addis
Ababa by Menelik II. Each stamp depicts an
Amharic letter and an important building. The
letters spell Addis Ababa.
At 25 cents, this letter probably went via
surface mail. 22 August(?) 1958 Asmara cancel.

15 April 1958 Conference of Independent African
States Air Mail Issue
In the mid-to-late 1950s, Hailé Selassié became
very involved in international affairs. He was an
important player in the Independent African
States conference that was held in Accra, Ghana.
Each stamp depicts a bust of Hailé Selassié map
of Africa, a Church at Lalibela and the Obelisk
at Axum.

1 December 1958 Anti-Tuberculosis Semi-Postal
Issue
Revalued re-issue of the 1951 anti-tuberculosis
issue. The surcharge was to aide tuberculosis
programs. Each stamps depicts a Sycamore tree and
a snake wrapped around an Onsata cross.

Conference Air Mail Issue
These stamps commemorate the first Economic
Commission for Africa conference sponsored by the
United Nations . Each stamp depicts the Emperor
standing beside a map of Africa and the United
Nations logo.
Correct 80 cent air mail rate to the United
States. 5 February 1959 DEPART. A.A. cancel.

30 May 1959 Red Cross Centenary Semi-Postal Issue
Where as the actual founding of the International
Red Cross was in 1864, the idea of a society to
help wounded people occurred to IRC founder Henry
Durant in 1859. This is the reason for the 1959
issue. All stamps depict Princess Tsahai in
attendance at a patients bedside.

Overprint in Black Very common to find variety in
bars making of the

Probably underfranked by 10 cents. 1.95 (3 X 65
cents) triple weight air mail postage 35 cents
would give an expected rate of 2.30 rather than
the 2.20 franking on this cover.
