  • Made up of 17,508 islands Indonesia is the
    worlds longest archipelago separating the Indian
    Ocean from the Pacific

INDONESIAMain Islands are Sumatra, Java, and
Celebes. Most of the Island of Borneo and half
the Island of New Guinea also belongs to
Indonesia

INDONESIAWith 220.5 million people, Indonesia is
one of the largest countries the world

INDONESIA This huge population represents many
different ethnic groups, languages, and religions
  • There are over 300 different native ethnic groups
    in Indonesia
  • The Melanesians are subdivided into the Acehnese
    of north Sumatra the Bataks of northeastern
    Sumatra the Minangkabaus of west Sumatra the
    Sundanese of west Java the Javanese in central
    and east Java the Madurese on the island of
    Madura the Balinese on Bali the Sasaks on the
    island of Lombok the Timorese on Timor the
    Dayaks in Kalimantan and the Minahasa, Torajas,
    Makassarese, and Buginese on Sulawesi.

  • Languages include Bahasa Indonesia, English,
    Dutch,and local dialects representing the vast
    amounts of different ethnic groups
  • Austronesian linguistic family

  • Indonesia has more Muslims than any other country
    in the world
  • 86 of Indonesias people practice Islam

  • Other Religions include Christianity 9, Hinduism
    2, Buddhism, and many native religions.
  • These religions were brought by the many
    travelers, traders and colonizers on these islands

  • While Indonesia gained its independence from its
    Dutch (Holland) colonizers in 1949, it has
    struggled to become an economic leader

  • Corruption and political opposition have long
    been the cause of Indonesias underdevelopment

  • In the same way that Indonesia is populated by
    diverse peoples and religions, Malaysia and its
    port cities have become an international community

  • While corruption and political instability has
    slowed Indonesias economic growth, Malaysia has
    become one of the wealthiest nations in Asia

  • Malaysia exports a tremendous amount of natural
    resources including rubber, oil, natural gas,
    tin, iron ore, and copper.

  • Malaysia has also become a leading manufacturer
    of high-technology goods such as microchips

Malaysias constant economic growth has caused it
to become a target of resentment and anger in
South east Asia

  • Malaysias western-style capitalism has also led
    many in this strongly Muslim country to call for
    a return to more conservative view of Islam and
    rejection of Western ideas.
