The Pacific

• By far the largest of the five oceans, the
  Pacific covers nearly one-third of the globe, an
  area approximately 64 million square miles.

The Arctic

• Centered approximately on the North Pole, it is
  the smallest of the world's oceans, covering
  about 4,732,000 square miles.

The Indian

• The Indian Ocean is often thought of incorrectly
  as a tropical ocean, but really it stretches
  south all the way to Antarctica. Although it
  covers about 28.5 million square miles, it is
  also the third largest ocean.

The Southern

• A decision by the International Hydrographic
  Organization in 2000 decided to create a fifth
  world ocean - the Southern Ocean - from the
  southern portions of the Atlantic Ocean, Indian
  Ocean, and Pacific Ocean. The Southern Ocean is
  now the fourth largest of the world's five oceans
  (after the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, and
  Indian Ocean, but larger than the Arctic).

The Atlantic

• The hourglass shaped Atlantic covers
  approximately 20 percent of the Earth's surface
  and is the second largest of the five oceans.
