Title: HISTORY OF ENGLISH FOOTBALL
1HISTORY OF ENGLISH FOOTBALL
2EARLY HISTORY OF FOOTBALL
In the late 13th century and early 14th century
street matches were so popular in London that
traders called on King Edward 2 to out- law the
game in the city. Thus on 13th April 1314 the
first football ban came into force. But the ban
proved quite ineffective despite the threat of
prison. The only ban with any level of
effectiveness was that imposed by Oliver Cromwell.
At that time the ball was made of a blown bladder
and cased in leather.
3- The shape of English and indeed world football as
we know it today was set over a century ago. - By the 1860s football was beginning to look like
the game we know today. But there were still
differences between the rules used at different
schools. - On 26 October,1863,a group of Victorian gentlemen
representing the different football clubs met at
the Freemasons Tavern in London. - After many hours of argument, the clubs finally
agreed on a single set of rules for association
football or soccer. They wrote these rules down
in an ordinary exercise book. This exercise book
is now in the FA museum. - So modern game of football was born on 26
October,1863.

5The Original FA CUP
- The original FA cup was first played for in
1871,and the Football League founded in 1888. - It was stolen in 1895 and never found.
6- Did the Victorian gentlemen at the Freemasons
Tavern understand what they were doing? Probably
not. The football they knew had no stadiums or
supporters or cups or leagues. It was played by
rich young men in a few English schools and
universities, was not an international game or
even a national one. - On July 20,1871 another important meeting of the
Football Association was held at the office of
The Sportsman newspaper in London. - Charles Alcock suggested a cup competition based
on the inter-house competition at Harrow School.

10REASONS FOR FOOTBALL"S GROWTH
- The growth of the railways from the 1840s allowed
people to travel around England. - English sailors took football with them to the
ports of Italy ,Spain ,Brazil and Argentine.
Friendly games with the locals were played and
football spread. - Football was cheap-it required very little
equipment, could be played anywhere and in almost
any weather.
11Professional Football
- Professional football was born in the North
England, and for many years there were no
professional clubs south of Birmingham. - Crowds coming to games grew very quickly.
- 2,000 people attended the first Cup Final in 1872
,but they did not pay to see the matches. - In 1888 Cup Final they were forced to close the
gates for the first time with 18,00 paying
customers inside the ground. - 66,000 were at Crystal Palace to watch the 1897
Cup Final between Aston Willa and Everton. - But there were problems when teams did not arrive
for matches, or when they did not send their best
sportsmen. - English football needed a new competition. A
competition lasting the involving all the best
teams in the country.
12- The British introduced football to the world and
the game created new business opportunities for
them. British factories began producing
footballs, football boots, football shirts and
football scarves .
