CNES Activities related to the OAIS Reference
Model

  • 30 October 2000

2
Meetings
  • 30 May 2000 CNES - Bibliothèque Nationale de
France (French National Library), ParisOAIS work
conference with the representatives of the NEDLIB
    project.
  • The experience acquired by NEDLIB in application
    of the Model is significant
  • the main comments concerning the preservation
function defined by NEDLIB and concerning
Emulation techniques were summarized in a paper
sent to P2 in July 2000

3
OAIS RM Presentations
  • 15 June 2000, CNES, Paris
  • OAIS RM presentation organized jointly by the
CNES and the French National Library
  • didactic presentation of the Model
  • presentation of the application of the Model by
    NEDLIB
  • presentation of interactions between the OAIS RM
    and the CNES archive activities
  • open to a dozen organizations concerned with
    information preservation activities

4
Consequences
  • Following the meeting on 15 June, participants
thought it was necessary to set up a permanent
work group to deal with archiving questions
  • to exchange knowledge and know-how (in French)
    between French organizations concerned with
    archiving,
  • In this context the OAIS plays an astonishing
    unifiying role between previously separate
    communities Scientific data centers, national
archives, libraries, private company assets, etc.

5
The Archive Group
  • First group meeting on 28 August 2000
  • define general objectives
  • draw up a work plan
  • define a modus operandi
  • propose enrolment in the ARISTOTE association
  • The ARISTOTE association
  • is non-profit making (http//www.aristote.asso.fr
    / )
  • is designed to share knowledge and know-how
    within government bodies
  • has the CNES, the major French research
organizations, the French Electricity Board, etc.
    as members
  • is open to private companies, but government
bodies must retain their majority status

6
Group work plan (1)
  • General standards related to archiving
  • draw up the inventory of what exists in the
    different communities,
  • identify missing standards
  • Vocabulary
  • some communities already have standardized
    terminology or terminology undergoing
    standardizationFor example Project for a
    dictionary of archive-related terminology
    (English-French-Spanish-German)
    http//staff-www.uni-marburg.de/mennehar/datiii/
    engterm.html
  • hence a need for equivalences

7
Group work plan (2)
  • Information to be preserved
  • list the different information categories
  • classify formats
  • perpetual and non perpetual formats
  • perspectives opened by XML
  • Representation Information
  • document life cycle
  • collect information from producers
  • PDI
  • difficulties encountered in these fields

8
Group work plan (3)
  • Archive systems
  • global aspects architecture, architecture
    comparisons
  • essential functions ingestion, storage, data
    management, access, administration
  • transfers
  • archive interoperability
  • archive access security

9
Group work plan (4)
  • Organizational questions
  • the different roleplayers and their roles
  • the respective roles of
  • information professionals archivists,
    librarians, documentalists, scientists
  • engineers and computer scientists

10
Operations
  • Meetings every 2 to 3 months
  • specialized subgroups formed on different themes
  • bilateral contacts and meetings between
    organizations
  • mail discussion forum opened
  • Web server to be opened to capitalize and
    facilitate access to group work
  • visits to the archive sites of each institution
    are planned

11
Current group composition
  • Approximately 25 people (but the group is
    growing)
  • A dozen institutions represented

  • French National Scientific Research Center (CNRS)
  • heritage institutions
  • French Archives

  • French Electricity Board (EDF), French railways
    (SNCF), Representatives of certain ministries

12
Other perspectives
  • Propose a CNES R and T action to develop an
    Archive System prototype which is
  • portable,
  • in compliance with the OAIS RM,
  • interoperable (based on the same interoperability
technologies as those currently implemented in
the SPASE - Space Physics Archive Search Engine
    project)
  • NEDLIB Workshop in the Hague in December 2000
  • a presentation of the OAIS Model is planned
