co-ordinator designs the course in conjunction
with the Industry, Business, Authority in
conjunction with the Adult Literacy Organiser
using an outline framework devised by NALA.
Ø The design of the course should meet the
challenge of providing accessible and flexible
models of accreditation and certification, which
maintain quality standards but which also meet
the needs of the participants. Ø The course
aims to offer learning opportunities, which would
be relevant to the cultural and diverse needs and
interests of participants. Ø In designing
the course issues of timing, access, environment,
teaching methods, etc, are all seen to be
intrinsic parts of the process for achieving
successful participation. The Content Communicati
ons Letter writing, form filling, message
taking, listening skills, communication skills
including strategies for learning spelling, and
memory aids Computers Basic computer skills,
keyboard skills, basic word processing and
spreadsheets. Use of special reading and writing
software as appropriate Numeracy Subtraction,
addition, multiplication, division percentages,
timetables, budgeting and basic
statistics Personal Including self-awareness,

- Introduction and awareness raising event for

- Ø The project co-ordinator follows up the
local supervisors, area engineers, or overseers,
who in turn may identify participants to take
part in the course. -
- Ø Interested participants are interviewed,
generally in the workplace, and are subsequently
recruited for the course. -
- Ø The Industry, Business or Local Authority
organise their release from the workplace for 4
hours per week, usually over a 20-week period (80
hours in total). -
- Ø The project co-ordinator liaises with the
local supervisors, area engineers, or overseers,
to ensure ease of transfer for the learner
between the workplace and the course. -
- Ø Total confidentiality applies to all
participants. -
