1Helping Refugees UNHCR is one of the worlds
principal humanitarian agencies. The cornerstone
of the agencys work is international protection.
In practice that means ensuring respect for a
refugees basic human rights. To ensure that no
person will be returned involuntarily to a
country where he or she has reason to fear
persecution. UNHCR also assists refugees with
shelter, water, sanitation and medical care. The
organisation seeks long-term solutions by
helping refugees to repatriate to their home
country if conditions warrant, by helping them
to integrate in their countries of asylum or to
resettle in third countries.
