My name is Mr. Graves, and Im your new band
director.
I have decided that we are going to have
auditions to determine who will be first and
second chair in each section.

If you are named first chair, it means you are
the best player in your section. Second chair
means you are the second best.
What is the difference between first and second
chair?

Im nervous for the band auditions! I really want
to be first chair!
I think we all have a good chance of doing well!

• Later that night

I dont know! Im going to practice a lot and
work really hard. I really want to be first chair
in the clarinet section.
Today in band practice, Mr. Graves announced that
we are going to have auditions to decide who will
be the first and second chairs in each section!
How do you think you will do?

Im glad you are going to try your best! Maybe
its time we bought you a newer, nicer clarinet.
The one you have now is not in the best condition.

I cant believe the day of auditions is finally
here! I hope I do well. Ive been practicing a
lot!

• The next day

May I have your attention? You all did a great
job at tryouts. It was very tough to make
decisions. Im going to announce the results of
the auditions now.
I will start with the clarinets. First chair is
Melissa!
Im so excited! All my hard work paid off!

Guess what?! Mr. Graves announced today that I am
the new first chair for the clarinets!
Were so proud of you!

• This was an important experience for me because
  it taught me that hard work does pay off in the
  end. Ever since this band audition, I have worked
  hard at everything I do, and I have experienced
  much success as a result.
