Title: Watch whats happening

1
Watch whats happening
  • Know it Works? Show it Works!
  • Presented by Linda Long, Health Improvement
Officer with resources provided by Andy Crossan,
    Video Production Officer, Sense Scotland
  • 4th of October 07Jurys Inn Hotel, Glasgow

2
Why use video?
  • To examine where things are working and where
they are not and to see what you missed first
    time around
  • To include all
  • To redistribute power
  • To illustrate progression along the way
  • To capture fun times for memory, create video
    diaries
  • To visually evidence impact
  • To capture those eureka moments
  • To demonstrate the value of the shared learning
    process

3
A barrier or an opportunity?
  • Getting user agreement from outset, both in
    filming and reviewing
  • A challenge to make everyone comfortable with
    filming
  • Need to agree ground rules eg confidentiality,
use of footage in external settings, what is and
    what is not filmed
  • Whos in charge?
  • Time consuming to review and log footage

4
A valuable project resource?
  • To set out work plan
  • To reflect on strengths and weaknesses
  • To plan next steps
  • To evidence impact
  • To share agreed footage with a wide range of
others eg, CHEX network, wider community,
conferences, events, funders, friends and family

5
Nurturing self-esteem?
  • Major ingredients
  • Connection being recognised within a social
    network
  • Authenticity involvement in a valued activity
  • Identity being respected as an individual with
    own personal interests

6
Icebreaker thoughts
  • Film project workers first perhaps
  • doing a new activity
  • to introduce the project and its support staff or
    funding
  • Other ideas?
  • Use this footage as conversation starter with
    group
  • did it help explain the activity?
  • Is it An activity the group or individuals would
    like to do?
  • What could be done better to improve outcomes)?

7
Measuring health improvement in action
  • Capture user views before and after on what they
think illustrates an improvement in their
    wellbeing
  • Group discussions
  • Individual interviews
  • Showcase
  • Optimism
  • Respect for self and others
  • Purposeful social involvement

8
In the beginning
  • Invest in a tripod
  • Have camera on from outset so that it becomes
part of the furniture and no one in group is
    taking the pictures
  • Read the manual(s)!
  • Review footage confidentially in the group, only
    showcase what you want!

9
But were not seeing anything
  • It takes time to evidence improvement but ongoing
video can capture the ups and downs!

10
How to measure wellbeing?
  • Its about quality of experience, not necessarily
    quality of
  • the conditions
  • Evidence of enjoyment is a reflection of quality
    of experience
  • Record activities, see the enjoyment good for
individuals, for group memory as well as for
    evaluation purposes
