The Revival of Storytelling and the Rise of
Storytelling and Health

• The rise and rise of storytelling in the UK (and
  elsewhere) since the early 1970s. Now over 400
  professional storytellers in the UK
• More recent growth of interest in storytelling
  amongst Health Care Professionals
• Why?
• Even more recently, an interest in Digital
  Storytelling

What is Digital Storytelling?

• Developed in California out of community
  arts/democratic arts/social arts movement
• Autobiographical
• Storytellers own voice and editorial control
• Typically 2-3 minutes long using still (and
  sometimes video) images and music overlay
• Developed in UK through Capture Wales project

Digital Storytelling in healthcare situations
the particular benefits

• Especially, but not exclusively, in palliative
  care
• Not just reminiscence therapeutic, but also
  creative
• Allows greater self-understanding
• Allows engagement with artefacts (e.g.
  photographs, music)
• Easy to use
• A record/legacy creating a thoughtful
  statement
• Quality of Life/The Dignity Agenda
