After an American Ship was caught, the British or
French crews would board the vessel, and fighting
ensued. After the American crew surrendered,
they would be broken up and forced to work on the
crews of other British or French ships in
violation of international treaties governing the
high seas. This was one of the main causes of
the War of 1812.
