Defining Motion
  • HOW MOTION IS DEFINED You are surrounded by
objects that seem to move in many different ways.
This variety of motion is made up of just three
    basic types.
  • 1.) Translational Motion motion is a straight
    line
  • 2.) Circular Motion movement around a central
    position
  • 3.) Vibrational Motion an object that moves
    back-and-forth from a central position

3
GRAPHING
  • Distance on Position Vs. Time Graphs
  • go to graph

4
Interpreting The Position Vs. Time Graph
  • The slope of the line is equal to velocity (m/s)
  • Slope determines not only how fast, but the
    direction
  • Velocity is the rate at which a position changes
    in time
  • The graph can be made from written words or words
can be written to explain the graph

5
GRAPHING
  • Velocity Vs. Time Graph
  • go to graph

6
Interpreting The Velocity Vs. Time Graph
  • The slope of the line is equal to the
    acceleration (m/s2)
  • Acceleration is the total change of velocity with
    time
  • Negative acceleration is called deceleration

7
GRAPHING
  • Acceleration Vs. Time Graph
  • go to graph

8
Interpreting The Acceleration Vs. Time Graph
  • The acceleration vs. time graph is drawn by
finding the slope on the velocity vs. time graph.
  • If an object has constant acceleration of 2 m/s2,
then for every second the object moves two meters
    per second faster.
  • Galileo 9.81 m/s2 acceleration for falling
object (experiment with falling objects off a
    balcony)

9
Rolling Object on Incline Experiment
  • Divide students in groups of two
  • Have the students set up incline so the entire
class is at the same height.
  • Roll the ball down the incline from 5 different
    levels. (40cm, 55cm, 70cm, 85cm, 100cm)
  • Time the object as it rolls from the top to the
bottom. Take three different times and find the
average of the three. Alternate partners timing
    in case of error.
  • Graph the results using the three different kinds
    of graphs

10
Combining All Three Types of Graphs(Position,
Velocity, Acceleration Vs. Time)
  • Use this question to draw the graphs
  • A car starts form rest, accelerates at a constant
rate for 5.0 seconds. Sketch the Acceleration Vs.
Time Graph first then the Velocity Vs. Time and
    the Position Vs. Time Graph
  • results of this example on graphs
